Definitely, go synthetic. I was 500 miles out in Wile E Coyote wilderness (for real... eastern Arizona) and the transmission failed. The synthetic doesn't drain completely off the parts, so it kept me going till I got to civilization (Albuquerque NM) and my destination. Everytime I stopped for gas, it'd act funny but kept going. All you'll need is the fluid, filter (it's really just a screen), and then a pan gasket. It'll be Mercon III or the synthetic equivalent.
***TIPS***
Make note of which pan bolts the cable bracket is bolted to, you'll need to know when putting things back together.
Don't do this on a surface that cannot be messed up like a concrete driveway, draining the pan has the potential to be a HUGE mess. Loosen the pan bolts, but then them out ONE CORNER at the time so that corner will drop more, letting the fluid splash over into a large drain pan. As the splashing slows down, take down another bolt to let it come down more which drains the pan more.
Wear a dirty shirt you don't care about, because the transmission fluid will literally get up to your shoulder when taking all those pan bolts out.
Tranny fluid stinks too, so a shirt you won't mind throwing away would be good.
