Default Speedo does not work

I have a problem with my speedo and was wondering if anyone could help. I just bought a 1988 Mustang with a fresh rebuilt motor and T5 transmission. I drove the car about 40km and the speedo stopped working. I pulled the speedo gear out of the transmission, and it is all there. I then spun the gear and had a friend look at my speedometer and found that the speedometer will jump when the gear is spun. Can anyone tell me what is wrong and how to fix it ?

I'm having trouble after my white faces were installed. Everything works except the gas. Quick question how high is the gas gauge when it is completely full? Is at the black line that says it's full are is it above it? If anyone has a gas gauge of car completely full that will help.
