Default Fuel- filler neck grommet

I need to replace the grommet that goes into the fuel tank filler neck because I'm leaking gas in this area.

My question is, Do I have to drop the Fuel tank to replace this or can I just unbolt the filler neck and slide it out to replace? I think I can do the latter but just wanted to ask anybody with experience.

Everything I read has you dropping the tank but that's only because they are doing other things too like replacing fuel pump, tank etc. But if I'm just replacing the grommet I don't think I have to lower the tank.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the reply, you were right.

Okay I'm done replacing the grommet. I tried to remove the filler tank without dropping the tank and it was near impossible. It would come out a little bit from the tank but not all the way because of the curve up top where you fill the car with gas.

So I went ahead and dropped the tank. Before I unscrewed the 2 straps all the way, I used bungie cords on both sides in the same area as the straps. My tank is pretty much empty.

I placed a big plastic container under the middle of the tank for support (milk krate was too short).

The bungies made it very easy to slide the tank towards the drivers side so I could remove the filler neck out of the tank the rest of the way.

My grommet was torn to pieces. Thanks to Ethanol and age I'm sure. I'll post pics if interested.

Pretty easy and straightforward!

Thanks again!
