3.70 or 3.90 gears on a GT

Right now I am running 3.55 and i think I want to upgrade to a better gear, I dont care for 4.10 gears because i will be driving it on the freeway , which out of the 2 is a better bang for the buck? I have a 90 GT, Not stock!

I love my 4.10's, so I would pick the higher (numerically) 3.90's. You really shouldn't fear the gear. Just an example of gas mileage with 4.10's, this weekend, I filled up my tank 14 gallons I think and I set my cruise at 70 - 80 mph
depending on traffic. At any rate, my odometre showed 340 miles, when the needle hit the red empty mark, which comes out to about 24.2 mpg. Hope this helps.

It really comes down to how much money you have. If you get Ford Racing gears, the install will be much cheaper, because you don't have to set as much. BUT Ford Racing doesn't make 3.90 gears, so if you want 3.90's you have to pay the extra install fee. Your choice.

Not to mention the speedometer calibration gear. Do they even make them for 3.90?

I have stock gears on my 95 and have thought about putting on something to make it launch a bit quicker. I've always felt my car had the power and could accelerate better but not being able to do the work myself, I thought it would cost too much to buy and have someone install them. Any idea how much a gear change costs?

Todd, the shop I go to charges $400 parts and labor, just to do a gear swap, using Motive Gear gears. However, I had the Traction Lok rebuilt with new clutch packs, bearings, seals, and Royal Purple gear lube, and the gears of course, done for $675. I'm extremely happy, and there is absolutely no noise. This is in North Carolina.

I'd say 3.90's also. I may be wrong but going from 3.55 to 3.73 wouldn't be noticable or worth the money.

going to a 3.73 from a 3.55 would be noticable, but barely. I would definitely got 3.90's in this application.

they do make a 3.90 but i wouldnt suggest it.. kind of an "oddball" gear gears arent that expensive either $200 at the most i agree with above i didnt but the 3.73's in mine or else they would b at LEAST 4.10's dont fear the gear. so i guess what im saying is i dont recommend either and to rethink the 4.10's back in the day old school boys were running 4.56's on 4 speed trannys as daily drivers
