for what ever reason i'm attracted to this thread like a mosquito to bug light.....

did some research the only thing i could find was a motor trend test article...

Yes a 88 gt did do 142 mph (speedo read 146) the goes the accuracy of the speedo theory.....

But this was done on a high bank race track with a professional driver under optimum conditions in 1988.....

So for those who still believe a basically stock 20+ year old car will do a 140 mph on a public highway allow me to salute the flag.....

please click the pic for optimum affect.....

I'm glad to see you found some information backing the other side. I'm not sure what a professional test driver has to do with holding one's foot to the floor for an extended period of time( I will admit it took a long time from 125 up and the windshield wipers chattered). It's amazing what a young, foolish (errr dumb), mountain boy descended from moonshiners will do. My best friend's former SSP car would regularly do things that it wasn't supposed to do as well (as in beating Grand Nationals of that era). The bumble bee isn't supposed to fly either based on sound engineering (too little wingspan, too much weight). Those cars were amazing which is why we still talk about them on forums twenty years later. I'm at peace now. Best wishes in dragging Reg.

The motor trend story that refers to 142mph is at www.stangbangers.net it is listed in there articles option at the top of the screen and I think they destroyed one of the cars because they ran it at high rpms for to long in fourth gear. I have owned four foxbody mustangs and my 90 GT with a 5-speed and 3.08 gears has been to 130 mph a few times but the handling in these cars gets very light at these speeds. I do not think I would want to try 145 on a stock suspension and at 130 mph It feels like the car would take for ever to hit a higher speed unless you were going down an incline just because of the way 4th gear runs out of steam and 5th is just too tall of a gear for the hp that these cars have stock to accelerate against the wind at that speed.

Thank you for your reply......

and your voice of reason.....

I will not address what a professional drive has to do with it sort of self explanatory..........

if you werent clocked at that speed i would doubt it, my 88 with my mods 4th gear is 100mph maxed on my speedo which is accurate on the dot speed flashy signs i know ill never see the 160 or past it like it shows on my speedo.

I just think the biggest problem is that people believe what their speedo is telling them. Really not a good guage when you are traveling at high speeds......

While were on the subject of the motor trend article about the 88GT somebody on this site needs to find the article and post it from the 1989 or 1990 issue of car and driver(I do not remember which year exactly) where they compared a 70 Boss 302 against a 89 or 90 GT. I cannot find this article on any archive sites but I know it exist.

You have a 3.73 gear!!!! That was not factory (and not conducive to high speed). Factory gear was 2.73 or 3.08 for hardtop stick cars. A 2.73 gear brought my car to redline in third at 100mph. I'm waiting for a former police officer to chime in and tell about the mustang he clocked at 140 back in the day. I have found multiple references with a simple google search to top speeds between 135-145. A car with a numerical ring and pinion than factory is senseless to bring into this discussion.

I believe you SnakePliskin. I believe in a foxbody with a fresh rebuild or original low milelage 5.0 that you could drive over 140 mph just like all of the magazines said from that time period but It would take a lot of open road with a slight down grade to achive this speed.

If you really want to confirm your speed bring along a gps. It can give you your speed anywhere on the Earth and its very accurate. My gps also has a top speed recording so you can just drive and you don't have to look at the readout.
