Default Black 1986 Mustang GT coming back from pasture

Hello all! I have joined to gather knowledge as I work on repairing and restoring my 86 GT. My car is an orginal black exterior red interior GT - one of only 500 produced. It has just over 415K on the orginal 5.0L.

The engine had some mild intake porting and cam work done back in 87 and valve cover gaskets were replaced in 97. Other than that it has never been torn into. It runs with 14 degrees of timing, no intake silencer, increased fuel pressure, etc-- all of the late 80's and early 90's tricks for more power. It has ran in the 13 second zone in the 1/4.

Presently the factory 5.0L still runs but is no longer all that strong and it leaks oil everywhere. It also smokes due to weak oil rings and completely destroyed valve seals and guides. All of this is to be expected- the car was beat on daily for many years while accumulating a massive mile count.

What exactly does it take to kill a 5.0L that has regular maintenance performed on it? I hve no idea-- mine has simply refused to die in spite of my drive it like you stole it driving habits. I can't say the same for the other things. 40 pairs of tires, two rearends, 6 transmisions, 11 clutch jobs, etc, have all fallen.

I parked it due to yet another T5 failure - sad. That one was a D&D unit with 300 lb carbon fiber input shaft upgrade. Two of the others were Z spec T5's - so much for being "stong".

Don't think the factory 5 has any power-- how does a 1 & 7/8" twist in the unibody, a diagonal crack in the floor, and stress cracks at all four roof seams sound? That's what happens when sticky tires weaken a body because they hook high R and you don't have a cage and welded in subframe connectors. It wasn't much fun to fix, but that was 200K ago and the fix has held after the connectors were put in and welded.

The car has caster/camber plates, subframe connectors, a strut tower brace, BBK equal length shorty headers, MAC X pipe, and MAC cat-back exhaust.

The stereo is already great - one of the car's best features. The 10 disc changer and Kicker comp subs and amps are all aging but still sound awesome. This won't get touched for some time.

I'm planning an A9L MAF conversion before tearing the engine down.

So far I have bought an Explorer intake, Edelbrock Performer heads, and another T5. A quality shifter is top of mind.

I haven't decided on what I will do to freshen the shortblock yet- really want to do a 331 stroker with forged internals if the budget allows.

I am considering going to around 12:1 compression and am thinking of getting a custom chip for the A9L so I can run E85 since it is 105 octane and cheap.

When I shift my focus to the body experience with replacing metal will get put to good use. The body will be mostly new when I am done. I plan to install all new metal (hood, fenders, doors, quarters, hatch, floor). I am considering sourcing a factory moon roof car's top from the scrap heap just because it's cool and just because I can.

The interior is already customized with one of a kind black/red door panels, center console, dash pad, black carpet, etc. The black/red theme will be carried through with new carpet, head liner, and seat coverings.

I'm also looking at upgrading brakes, suspension, etc, as well. Bless all the upgrades like torque arms and watts links and the modern differentials that have come out!

Looking forward to interacting with you all. Thanks for having me.

Welcome to AFM! I moved you over here because of your extensive intro - I knew it would be appreciated in this area!

I love reading about how long people have had their cars... I've never had a car worth keeping to me until we purchased our two Mustangs...

It's great to have your experience here - I know there's lots to read and reply to in this section....

Again, welcome!!

Thanks for the welcomes......

Northeastern79 - yea-- I will definately have my hands full.

I've contacted tmoss about porting the Explorer intake. I'm also looking for his opinion on TB and MA meter size requirements (and would be happy to hear other opinions too)

I have the 65MM off of an Explorer currently but am concerned it needs to be bigger- especially if I do go to 331 CID.

Cam selection will wait until I figure out what I'm doing with the bottom end for sure.

Depending on the condition of the pistons, rods, and crank that could open the door for a stroker kit.

I know I have to either notch the factory 86 pistons or get new anyway in order to use a decent cam with my heads.

Everything is so high mile that I'm really thinking to bite the bullet and just go .030 over as its really cheap displacement.

I absolutely will go with forged pistons again- Ford diserves some congratualtions for making an engine that lasts like this!

Provided the rods and crank are good ..... For the money I'm thinking there's more power to be had from compression than going to a stroker but I haven't priced out the 12:1 and higher compression pistons yet. (both high compression and more cubes would be awesome don't get me wrong)

As soon as I get the engine parts collected the next order of business will be finding somewhere in the Omaha area that's good for working on it- my two car attached garage at home isn't what I have in mind.

10 years ago I pulled the engine in my brother's Grand Prix (79 w Pawsten enterprises equipped 350 Buick) using the header of my garage and a comealong. Once the overhaul was complete there were major struggles pushing the car around to get everything resting back in the mounts- was a real drag and not to be repeated by me if I can help it. I'm hopeful to come up with somewhere in the near future.

The idea of storing my new heads doesn't thrill me. I'm nervous about head gasket retention with Aluminum heads anyway. I bought the Edelbrocks because I got an awesome deal on them on ebay. I've heard Edelbrock and AFR are usually good about gasket retention- I guess I'll find out on the Edelbrock front....

Does anyone disagree that 400-450 HP at the crank is a reasonable goal for a streetable 8.2 deck height SBF that's running on high octane?

I have several stations that sell E85 near me. I'm in the Cornhusker state so it makes sense to use corn derived power. I can't remember the last time a farmer has hijacked a plane plus it is mostly renewable energy so it just seems like the right thing to do.

Does anyone disagree with the intake, heads, and compression thoughts given it is a budget build that will be mostly street driven?

Who doesn't love to go fast... but I think this power level is about all the limit a stock block will handle. I don't see the need to account for luxury items such as boost or nitrous since I don't have enough block to handle it.

Heaven knows I better stop my 4000 RPM launch and power shifting ways and baby it a little or it will spit out another T5 in short order.

I know I need to study up on class rules soon or I'll eliminate the ability to fit in a reasonable class for my car at SCCA or the drag strip.

Presently I'm thinking a light weight aluminum fly wheel and 3.41:1 for the rear gears if I can find some out of an 86 SVO.

It's great to have all the stored rotational energy at the line to avoid bogging and also to have long legs and be able to run at insane speeds for hours at a time, but presently I'm thinking the lighter flywheel and steeper rear gears is about the only way the T5 has a shot at lasting.

Something has to give and neither the engine or the tires have been willing... blasted expensive weak links.....

Maybe I'll win the lottery and be able to afford my dream Viper Spec T56 6-speed some day.... (mate that .5:1 OD moster to 3.73:1 gears and you have the same crusing RPM and top end as 2.73:1 with a .63:1 OD-- wow)

You'll have plenty of help and advice here and hopefully we can help with every step. Help can be either suggesting what to get next, or it could be to skip a certain part. Either way, you'll get it here.
