Default solid vs hydro cam

How often would the maintenance on a solid roller cam be as far as adjusting the valves? What do you guys think about running one on a street strip car, driven about 50 miles a week? Would the extra hp advantage be worth the headache of adjusting valves?

Solid lifters require constant maintenance, you might be adjusting them every week. For the headache, it wouldn't be worth it considering you drive it only 50 miles a week.

I have read conflicting info on this topic. I have seen others suggest up to 10K before adjust. I have personally seen a street driver with solid flat tapet go 6 months between--believe me it was driven hard.

I am just now switching to solid roller on a 0.6" lift on 1.6 RR. I went with it because I was thinking it would be more reliable at my lift rates.

So to answer your question with a question, what cam specs were you thinking and what other car specifics can you share. I looked at your profile and got a sense you had fairly stock now. If that is the case you are surely in the hydraulic roller would be more reasonable. Solid do require more maintenance which could be considered a headache if you are not into that kind of thing.

I am a bit surprised by the 50 miles and adjust comments. Surely I yield to experts here, but ask for explaination.

Maybe you would have to re-adjust them every 50 miles of racing or so, but 50 miles of street driving won't require re-adjustment. Most Honda engines are still using solid lifters to this day and under normal operating conditions only require adjustment every 30,000 miles.

Now, as to whether or not the swap would be worth while, I would agree fully with the other guys and say 'No'. Hydraulic lifters make much better low-end torque than solid lifters, and most solid-roller-lifter sets require that you remove the heads just to get the lifters into (and out of) the lifter bores.

The only advantage to using solid lifters is if you are running the engine over 7500 rpm. If you're not, you probably will not see any gain from running solid lifters.
