Question Suspected Fuel Filter Problem HELP!!!!!!

Hey I have a 1989 5.0 gt... Recently when I was driving it started sputting out and dies when I slam on it aka When I race.....Now it does the same thing every so often when I hit normal bumps in the road. What could it be? Is this my fuel filter maybe or pump? At first I noticed it at the drag strip when I slammed into 3rd it made a poping sputter type noise wich it does everytime it does this then then the car dies...I have a a good new alternator, battery, spark plugs, and they have been tested and work fine... If it is the fuel filter or pump how much does it run to get put in?

Could be a weak fuel pump, or the connections to the pump are corroded. You need to check the fuel pressure when it happens to know for sure.

definately sounds like a fuel problem...start with the filter, and then the FP if the problem persists. Of course your fuel regulator may also be the culprit.

There is a Main fuel cut off switch in the trunk of your car. (ex. if you get in a wreck it automatically cut the fuel suppy off to the engine.) When you open your trunk its located about a foot away from the latch towards the drivers side of the car. Theres a (red) reset button. It should be pushed in. They have been known to act up quite a bit. That would be the first thing i would check. I had that problem before.

Hmm ok thanks but how can I check it when it happens due to the fact it doesn't do it all the time and most of the time when it does im usually driving either to or from work? I may try the fuel filter in teh morning and test it out at the drag strip tomorrow night and see how it runs with that... Any more suggestions on what it may be?

what i was trying to get at was just make sure the button was pressed in all the way. My 88 GT did the same thing i pushed the button a couple of times and the spitting and popping quit. But if it still does it fuel filter would be the place to start. Good luck

Yes it did i was in the middle of a race and i slammed it into 3rd and it died. Thats when my buddy told me about the reset switch and we open the truck and it was tripped out. I reset it and the next day was when it started to spitt and spudder. I give it a nice couple of pushes and never had the problem again.
