Any Suggestions? 1990 Mustang GT, Acceleration / Power Problem

I have a 90 GT, manual trans, almost entirely stock. I just recently started having trouble accelerating. Once she's warm, only during acceleration in 2nd through 5th gears the RPM's will go way up, then come down and then the speed will begin to increase. This effect is worse during the heat of the day and sometimes I don't notice it at all during the drive in to work in the morning.

I have heard everything from its the type of gas I am using (93) to an aging clutch. Has anyone out there experienced this and have some words of wisdom?? I appreciate the help!
Erik

On a stock or mostly stock 5.0 you should either be running 87 or 89 octane. No need to go any higher. Bump your timing up to 12*-14*.

If the RPMs go up and doesn't move your car, it could be the clutch going bad. Which from your description, a bad clutch would be my guess...

Based on your description, I'd say it's the clutch that's the problem. Your octane rating wouldn't cause it to rev up and not accelerate.

Ask me why I ran "only" a 13.54.

Ok, thanks for the help. I see there a ton of different companies making clutch kits...any recommendations on good replacement clutch?

Is your car stock?

... Nevermind, read your original post...

Just stick with a stock clutch. The other two clutch kits I would suggest would be the King Cobra clutch or Spec 1. There are plenty out there to choose from though.

If you go with a reputable name, chances are you'll get a good clutch. Centerforce, Spec, Fidanza, Hays, McLeod, Zoom, they're all good and you can't go wrong with any of them.

Personally, I'd go with a Centerforce or Spec.
