I am wondering if anyone knows the rear end gear ratio for a stock 1988 GT? I found a deal on an 8.8 that I am thinking of putting in my Turbo Stang, but the guy selling it said that gear ratio was 2.73, when I am pretty sure it is supposed to be 3.73. 2.73 would be great for highspeed chases and running away from the cops on the highway () but not so great for fuel consumption in the city and red-light races!
Just hoping someone can shed some light on the issue so I can get the right rear end for my 2.3!
Thank-you very much for the clarification 89Coupe. I don't think that 2.73's are what I am looking for, but how much would it cost for parts (gears etc) to put a new set of 3.73's in this said 8.8" rear end? Does $200 sound right for gears?
Another question: Would this rear-end contain Traction-Loc technology?
Thanks, Steve

Hey, man i agree with u about other people working on the car. I don't know u but i know i would not be able to do gears without someone that does know how to. thats one of the only things i wouldn't just try by myself. so to fix that problem. i just got a whole rear and put that in myself. plus, there is no cheaper way to do it. $200 for a whole used rear with 3.73's or 3.55's. plus, u can change all ur control arms right away. if one was so inclined.

Good point Shadow,
For technical things like that I am lucky because my neighbour happens to be a professional mechanic who enjoys showing me how to do things the right way. He has helped out a lot and is a vast resource of knowledge. So far I have done a lot of technical stuff that at first had no idea how to do but after learning how to do it once, I am good to do it over and over. The rear end is something we haven't covered yet, so soon enough he'll be getting a knock on his door.
And the rear end is $150, plus $150 for the gears... So I am probably going to hit up the wrecker or keep waiting for one to pop up for about $200 like you said.
And I do realize that changing out the rear end gears is a technically involved process, but the feeling of accomplishment after learning something and then putting that knowledge to the test right away is like nothing else!
Hell ya, do it man, if i knew someone that could show me i would pay the extra for the gears and rear and the kit. Cause then i would know how to do it forever.........like u said show me once im good.
