Default 1985 Mustang: What is needed for CFI to Carb Swap?

We have a 1985 Mustang Convertible, V8, auto, with CFI and are wondering what is necessary for swapping it to a carb setup. Like in terms of fuel delivery, and spark? what else is needed to complete this install besides carb and intake? I saw a post containing a link to http://www.jason.fletcher.net/tech/e...b/cfi-carb.htm but this article is no longer online. Thanks for any help.

well glad you asked, of course you will need the carb and intake, but also you will probly need a duraspark distr. with a steel gear depending on your cam if its the steel roller. you will also need the duraspark ignition box, these are very easy to install. as for fuel delivery, if it has an intank pump, you should get the straw conversion, and mount an external fuel pump, 4 to 10 psi pump for your carb, 4 to 5 would be good, anymore would probly need regulated. well i hope this helps

Two alternatives to the dura spark and electric fuel pump would be a(n) HEI Distributor and swapping the timing cover for a mechanical fuel pump (providing the cam has the drive for it).

Just listing other options...

Thanks, my dad knew about the distributor but was curious about the fuel delivery. What is Straw Conversion? and where can you buy this? The car just has a stock cam im not sure if that provides drive for a mechanical fuel pump or not. Thanks for the replies.

hey, i should have explained that better, you just need the fuel pickup tube for the fuel tank, look for pre 84 pickup tube (any stock carberated mustang that year or newer should have one).

The above stated is not necessary since the car is CFI and not EFI...

The '85 CFI cars have 2 fuel pumps, one mounted on the frame which is the high PSI unit for the injectors, and then the 6 PSI in-tank pump that gives good PSI for the carburetor!

There fore, just remove the high pressure pump and either put a bridge in the spot or run new fuel line from the tank to the carb (which is what I recommend).
