im rebuilding my 5.0 and was wondering if porting the heads and intake was worth while? will be mostly stock just going to be a daily driver mods will come later but while its torn down i thought i might do this.

your better off getting the gt40.p heads than spending the money porting the stock castings
A while back I ported a lower and cut and welded a upper. Ran ok, But a explorer intake is well worth all those hours you will waste for marginal gains.

if you can do the work yourself it would be worth the minimal gain.....
sort of an S's & G's kind of thing
if you going to pay to have it done not worth the effort or money......

so to make a real difference i would need the gt 40s to go with the intake?? not just port my heads with the explorer intake? and do you know what year models explorer will fit? thx

I agree with Reggie, if it isn't in your budget to get new heads and intake, getting the grinding wheel out and opening and smoothing the ports will net some seat in the pants results and you can say you did it YOURSELF!

I ported my stock heads/intake 2 years ago after a head gasket blew (t'stat stuck closed) and it was definitely worth the effort but if you have the opportunity to buy GT40/GT40P heads/intake from a Cobra/Explorer, you're better off starting with those as a base and porting those instead.
For the cost of hitting a junk yard or craiglist the GT40 is a better baseline to start from and has far more potential in the long run over the stock intake and good ole 7's.

If you decide to do any DIY porting, follow instructions found on an internet search, backed up with flowchart numbers. TMOSS from the Corral forum has done hundreds of intakes (Including my Performer). Definitely don't just start grinding away indiscriminately on heads. You can easily make them worse. As already stated, better to just start from a better base. GT40 or P heads and intake off an explorer.
