Default 1986 Mustang 5.0 to 351 conversion

Ok people, my 1986 5.0 is great but after the years of beaing rode hard she is starting to lack on the power just a little. Or maybe i'm finaly starting to get used to her. I had a friend tell me that his neighbor has a bronco that has a 351 in it that runs great. He bought it for the body parts, and wanted to know if i wanted the engine for my car. I can buy the engine for 100 bucks and that includes the trans. My question is if the 351 will have more balls than my slightly modified 5.0 H.O motor, and if it possible to install it in the car. also will my 5 speed bolt to it, or can i use the trans that it has on it. if any of ya have performed this conversion or just know if it can be done please let me know. thanks

yes it will fit, and yes your 5 speed tranny will bolt right up to it.

thats cool, but is it worth the trouble or should i just stay with the 302. i'm not sure of the horse power differences between the two.

Just because it's a 351 doesn't mean it's automatically more powerful, there were some anemic 351s that came out.

What year Bronco is it?

Are you thinking of just sticking it straight in, with no changes at all? The year of the Bronco would tell if it'd be worth the hassle and expense of swapping it in. Now if you were going to improve the engine with better heads, intake, and so on, then of course the 351 would be better. It'll go right in with a 351 swap kit that has the parts you need.

ya my plan is to build it up with a big cam and some good heads and all the fuel it can handle. i liked the idea of having a engine that i could build up wile im still driving the car and when i get it done then stick it in. I havent looked into the build up kits and how much horse power this engine is capible of, but i was told that a 351 done write is an animal not to be messed with. the car is already set up for running blocks, old style street race. 4:11 pose, biggest throttle body i coiuld get and the upper ed ported and pollished, stage two cam and roller rockers. it also has cregar ultralite rims, 4inch skinnys on the front and 10 inch on the back. it runs real strong and yet i can use it as a every day driver sorta, but just like the ladies say size does matter

Then if that's the case, then it's party on and go with the 351.
