Default Need Advice & Help for 1989 Mustang GT Convertible In Nashville TN

I just bought an 89 5.0 GT convertible a couple of weeks ago with plans to fix up. First I need a new top, looks like the last owner actually tried to install it himself and didn't know what he was doing! going back with a new black top and will be painting the body black once the top is finished next week Also I am looking for someone in the Nashville area who knows 5.0 mustangs and can help me get this thing where I want it to be under the hood. The engine has 166,000 miles so I want to start there. I am looking for suggestions on what I should do to really make this car a performance machine. I really want to keep the original motor for now, so what can I do. I would appreciate any help you guys feel like giving!

Default Agreed!

I have talked to a guy here in Nashville about doing just that, pulling the motor and doing a thorough rebuild. He told me that any performance parts I wanted to add I could buy and bring to him and he would add them or replace them when he puts everything back together. I see where lots of people start by going overboard and end up not really happy. Not trying to build a drag car, but wanting to get up around the 325-350 HP range. don't want to buy a bunch of useless stuff that really doesn't make a difference, basically that just looks good. Thanks for the advice!!

trying to keep it around $2500 on the engine. Starting with Ford Racing Rebuild kit, Underdrive Pully, Cold Air Intake.

I know it will cost more to do more, but I am just looking to get a good start and work on the engine over the next 6 months. Don't want to get to deep in with money on the engine since there are some others things I need to do to the car like paint and a new conv top. Plus I am getting new tires and wheels.

try to build up the foundation for future mods. a good valve job and port and polish your heads will do wonders for your breathing. a good cam and intake will help too. call summit, edlebrock or comp cams for a recomendation. If you spend 5 mins searching the web, you will find a million ideas. just have a plan of where you want to end up with and build accordingly.

your power goals are well within you reach with the 5.0

i would get a set of gt40p heads or something of that sort thats not too expensive and add a true 45 horsepower, then some roller rockers, aftermarket springs, and a camshaft and a intake and headers and that should push you up a good bit it did me

If the bottom end is still strong and not burning oil you could just do a h/c/i combo. You could pick up a set of good used aluminum heads, used intake,a new cam and get around 300rwhp. Dont forget to factor in all the little stuff like gaskets, oil, better roller rockers. These items will add up.

Your combo look like a great starting point. After that look at ignitions, headers, and mufflers. You will want that stang sounding good with that new top down. that comp cam is nice choice. Summit has Never let me down.

Listen, the stroker 331/347 is really the way to go these days for amazing performance, save and buy the best you can, don't skimp on the heads...it will be scary fast if you do it right.

The order takers at Summit lied to you.....

A cam in stock motor without upgrading the heads and intake is total waste of time and money.......
