Default Necessary for Manual Valve body?

I have a race set up AOD transmission in my 1987 GT, When I shift from first to second gear I have to go up then back down to first to stay in second (I have the stock automatic shifter that came with the car). My question is do I have to get a manual valve body to fix this problem so I can just shift up through every gear or can I just get a B&M ratchet shifter, or is there any other choice?

Thank You In Advance,

Michael

A ratchet shifter won't give you the control you want. The only way to get 100% control over the shifts is to get a full manual valvebody. I have one and it's the best thing to do for an AOD. Continuing to do the 1-D-1 shuffle will eventually cause damage to the transmission. The short version is that doing this causes fluid pressure to dump at the wrong time, engaging the overdrive band prematurely and causing band failure.

The problem is the AOD wasn't ever designed to be used in a performance application so it didn't have the function of selecting all gears. The only way to get that is to change it's mechanicals with a valvebody. A shifter doesn't do that.

Need to know more about what to expect with a full manual, just ask.

Lentech, Performance Automatic, Dynamic Racing Transmissions, Art Carr, they all make manual valvebodies.

I have the Art Carr unit, and it was a direct bolt in. When I got it, it was new to the market and was $359 but with the AOD gaining popularity, the price has gone up. Shop the names Reggie and I have given you and then decide if you want to pursue one.
