Default GT40 head question

I found a couple of Explorers at the junk yard with 5.0's, 1 is a 96 and the other is a 99, any difference in the heads for these or which would be a better choice? I didn't think to look at the mileage on either one. They are both Cash For Clunker cars so I would guess the heads would still be OK to use if they locked the motor up? Also what all would i need off of them for my mustang besides the intakes.

Um, I would be EXTREMELY careful buying parts from a "cash for clunkers" clunker. They run a special fluid in the oil to lock up the engine. Since they put it in the oil that stuff has ran through the heads too.

Other than that warning, I can tell you that the '96 has the standard GT40 heads, and the '99 will have GT40P heads. The "P" heads have a different plug angle which requires the use of certain headers. The "P" heads make slightly more HP than the standard 40 heads but it's not enough to really talk about even.

If you get the 1996, it'll have provisions for the EGR so you don't have any issues with that. The 1999 doesn't have the EGR system so you'd have to come up with a way to make the EGR work, or delete it.

Ask me why I ran "only" a 13.54.

Do you think the heads will be ok even though they're out of a "clunker"???

Uh, maybe if they're hot tanked to make sure that stuff they use to lock it up is cleaned out. Even then I'd have them magnafluxed and thoroughly checked.
