I bought a 91' GT in the summer and it has some stuff done to it like magniflow mufflers with the x system. Cool air flow intake. But, one thing I cannot figure out is if it has a cam or not. I need help finding out if it does or not. Can you tell by the sound or do i have the tear the motor down to find out? Give me some thoughts, thanks!
depends on what kind of cam, some cams will make your car idle rough... if it has a cam and whoever put it in never went much bigger on the lifts it would be hard to tell..
+2^ most likely you going to have to end up tearing it down.

Yeah, unless it's a big lopy cam and sounds like a drag car, then it's practically impossible to tell if you have an aftermarket cam without pulling the cam out and checking.
And if you have the stock heads and intake, then hopefully the previous owner was smart enough to leave the stock cam in there.

Yeah but to actually tell if you which cam it is you are pretty much outta luck. Actually I was working on a friend of mine's car and I tracked down a vacuum leak that made his car sound like it had a cam.

he is not asking what cam? he is asking if it has one or not!!!
you don't need to pull the cam out to check to see what it is. you can pull the valve cover and put a dial indicator on the spring retainer, rotate the engine by hand and get the lift, if its got stock rockers compare that # to a stock cam, if its larger then you could stick a degree wheel on the crank and sort of figure out the specs w/o pulling the cam out.
there's a write up on how to degree the cam in the engine in the car around here somewhere.

we changed out lifters, added roller rockers, valves, valve springs, and a slight port job so yes, he is correct from the base number where we where at.
was that guy in the video serious? around 5 seconds in.."probably about a good 30 to 50hp more"...???
"where's my NAZZZZ button?!"

I'd have to see the dyno sheet. A B cam hasn't ever improved an otherwise stock engine by 30-50 hp before. I also hear a huge exhaust leak.
Not saying I don't believe you, anything is possible, but I haven't seen a jump from putting a bigger cam in a stock engine. 30-50 is a broad range to guess from.

Thats the old school "budget" way of getting the sound. I have heard stories from my dads friends say they use to pull over before they got to a car show and disconnect a vacumme line for the effect

You cannot always tell from the sound at idle if it has a stock cam or not. There's plenty of bigger cams that run as smooth as stock. You would have to measure the lift and then go from there. Measure it on the retainer, then you get the total valve lift without recalculating the rocker ratio. If it's more than .444 lift, then use a degree wheel and get more specs.
Or if it's running fine, don't worry about it and party on.
