Just wondering what would be better, the edelbrock performer intake or a ported and port matched explorer? The edelbrocks' casting is pretty rough looking, I can't see how it would flow better than a nicely ported explorer? I guess it comes down to the upper's flow....any thoughts on this would be great!
the uppers are the main problem for the ford designs the edelbrock will flow more air the passages are alot bigger, you could always have the edelbrock cleaned up as well

Thanks for the relpies, the only thing that i have heard that would sway me away from the Edelbrock is the power range, I have read that they are more effective from the 1500rpm up where the Explorer is idle through 5500, and I will be on the street 99% of the time with only bolt on goodies....
FWIW I saw an increase in torque right across the rpm range when I swapped my Performer intake in place of the stocker, so you needn't worry about low rev torque.
So Edelbrock it is, but what is the horsepower limitation with that intake? Are they ideal for a 347 stroker? I want to do a few easy bolt ons for this winter, get to know my way around the 5.0 and have a nice ride for the spring and next winter, stroke it and start to really make some power, so my last question is: Is it worth the extra cash to get the Performer over the Explorer or will I end up wanting something better when I try to get 350-400hp out of a stroker?
if you use that intake(either) on the stroker then you'll only get 350 hp out of it.
pick up the GT40 for $150ish, clean it up and put it on, next year sell it for $150.

The Edelbrock Performer produces its best performance from idle-5500rpm in a 302 though it still breathes well up to 6000rpm. A 347 will need 15% more air to pull to 6000rpm and put down 350rwhp, so you'd need an intake that can flow 250-260cfm. In that case, I'd recommend the Edelbrock Performer RPM II.
^^^Thats exactly what I wanted to know, I will get by with the less expensive explorer for next summer, seeing as I will need to get something better in the long run anyways.
Anyone know why the tubular GT40 says it's good up to 450HP whereas the Cobra/Explorer are only rated to 350HP?

Must be the upper since they use the same lower. I know the individual runners are cooler than the cast upper, so maybe it's that.
Plus it just LOOKS better.
Yer dern tootin'!
