Question Cam for 1990 Mustang GT?

I was wondering if you guys could help me find the right cam for my stang. I want one that sounds good and gives a little power boost. Power boost isn't important to me at the moment I just want that beautiful cam sound coming out of my baby. If you guys could give me a website or tell me where you would suggest getting one that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Is your car stock? If so I know many will poo poo the original Ford Motorsports cams in favor of the latest and greatest but the good old "b" series and "e" series Ford racing /motorsports cams give good usable power and a healthy rumble. I prefer the "b" for sticks and the "e" for auto's. We're neighbors I notice. You could also contact Robert Hindman here in Knoxville for tips 865-688-7890. He is a legend in the mustang drag racing scene and has a mustang shop in Black Oak Ridge off Tazewell pike.

If you still have stock heads and intake, forget about an aftermarket cam. You most likely won't even see any extra power, and if you do the power gains won't be close to justifying the cost and effort of a cam swap.

just my opinion a putting just a cam in a stone stock motor is a complete waste of time & mostly money.....

reggie's right..cam swap is not just any easy bolt on..you have to basically take EVERYTHING off the motor aside from the heads, and at that point,to tear the motor down that far and NOT replace the heads is pretty silly..and if you're buying a cam for the sound alone, its the wrong reason to buy a cam..

some things that have to be removed are:radiator,a/c condenser,all accesory brackets&alternator,power steering pump,smog(if equppied),air intake,upper and lower intake manifolds,fuel rails,fuel lines,fuel injectors,various vaccum hoses,throttle cable,cruise control cable,valve covers,rockers,pushrods,lifters,all pullies,colling fan and shroud,overflow tank harmonic balancer,water pump,timing cover,and timing chain

heres the best answer ever to this kind of question. i wish i wrote it before he did

It will likely make less average power and torque over the whole rpm range; it will lose a bunch of torque down low making it not much fun to drive:fuel mileage will be killed; without changing valve springs, it likely won't rev high enough to access more power on the top end without floating the valves.

Other than that -- it's a great idea.

If you have gear and intake done - add long tubes and exhaust; flat panel K&N in the stock box with silencer removed; bump timing to 14 btdc; add weld-in subframe connectors; add a 70mm maf off of a 94-5 Stang; add 65mm throttle body off of an Explorer and LEAVE THE CAM STOCK. Those changes will really wake it up; won't hurt emissions; may actually improve fuel mileage.

Do you want one with a roughed up idle that runs like crap? Or one that sounds basically stock but runs MUCH better? If you still want the roughed up idle - run a vacuum line into the interior. Put a cap over the end. When you're cruising into the cruise-in, pull the cap off creating a massive vacuum leak. It'll idle really rough - everyone will think you have an E cam. Then you can cap it up for the ride home --- and have the car work really well. Save your money for a set of heads -- camshaft last, after all else is done.

+2 ^^^^^ Buy an intake manifold instead. To take the cam out you going to have to tear the engine apart, just to not gain anything out of it but sound? get a exhaust system or something.
