I'm looking for a 4 speed transmission to replace my current one which as I have heard does not like power. Is the one in early 80's car's just as weak with a 300 Ft/p 302 behind it? Don't tell me to just swap to a T5 i'm not looking to bust my budget or my ass getting it to work.

I think they called them SROD I think but they was like a 3speed with 4 being OD If I remember right.

I wouldn't think that it would be alot to just put the T5 in there. It would for sure be stronger than the original type of trans. T5's now are a dime a dozen so they are not that expensive. You could find a used one from a trusted source for a couple hundred.
That would be the next question, see who has done it and what it took to install it.

Your right its called a SROD 4 speed overdrive transmission and they were junk...in the earlier 80" it was that or the T-5 my 83 came with the T-5. This can be identified by the Borg-Warner logo on the transmission case if that logo is present its a T-5

i have srod 4-speed still in my 87 5.0 ,thats the way it came, havent got around to c-4 conversion yet . there are 2 versions of this trans 1 weak other medium , take off trans top cover ,mainshaft gears will be either 1/2 inch(weak) or 3/4 wide(medium).i have driven mine for 2 yrs off and on , never abused it but got on it at least once a week still works good.do not buy used trans without removing top cover and reallly inspectig gears. t-5 or srod.fixing t-5 insnt cheap.you dont want to pay 300$ for t-5 and then have to pay 400-500$ for overhaul.
