So I was thinking about a building 347 over time but I think I need a fresh bottom end sooner than later. So, for the cost saving I'm opting for a 306:
-Stock Block/Crank/Rods
-Forged Pistons, flat with reliefs
-GT40 Heads and Ported GT40 Intake
-1.7 Roller Rockers
And all the bolt-ons that I already have:
MSD everything, elec fan, headman 1 5/8s unequals, BBK 2.5 h-pipe with flowmasters, Design 3 injectors (still 19#'s), 70mm TB, BBK CAI, 3.73's..
Just need to know what cam, if anything other than stock I should use keeping the Speed Density computer. I have no issue taking it to get a tune, but would still like it to start up when I drop it in. Would it be worth while using girdles? Or a windage tray? What kind of power should I expect form this basic combo, think I can get up to 300?

All suggestions with this combo welcomed!
well sounds like you re on your way. For the hp youre looking for you can just get a trickflow stage 1 cam. they are really good, but being that you have all that msd fire.you need some 24lb inj, mass air thats calibrated for the injectors and 190 fuel pump.now you got fire and the fuel to go with it.

oh you arent gonna need a girdle for what youre doin. use some arp bolts for you rods and main and you heads they will help your motor live.
Thanks guys, made a small adjustment, going with some of those E-Street eddies, I can find them for just under $900, can't go wrong with that for this mild-ish fox.....
There is a edelbrock intake for sale here for $275, but will it clear the taller valve covers? I imagine the eddy elites should work with an eddy intake? I needed a spacer to clear them with the explorer....
If you're saying you can get the Edelbrock E Street head for less than $900, then jump on it. GT40s are just a step above a stock head so you'll be better off.
The GT40 intake is hard to beat, nothing wrong with it. The Edelbrock is a good intake too, so that choice is up to you.
No ones addressed the TFS cam and speed density. You'll probably have idle issues and a surging idle until you get it tuned, or convert to mass air. Speed density can be used with aftermarket cams but they have to be made with speed density in mind. Otherwise, aftermarket cams play havoc with a speed density computer.

So after visiting a few machine shops around here, it seems like it's only about a $400 difference between building a 306 and a 331/347, basically the price of the crank. Built short blocks with scat kit without cam, timing chain, oil pump and pan for $3400. Does that sound right? Last time I bought a short block, it was a 350 and I think it was $1200! lol.....
