Hey guys as every body and their mother knows Im still in the market for a Stang, and Ive seen like 3 '84 SVO's around for sale, from like 5000 to 3000. I was just wondering how cool they are. I really dont know a whole lot about them.
They're pretty cool. I've had my 85 1/2 SVO for about 3 years now. They have quite few unique features (other than the obvious body differences):
- 5 lug wheels
- 4 wheel discs with 73mm front calipers
- tubular front a-arms
- Hurst shifter
- Koni shocks
There's a few other things I'm forgetting. They handle much better than a V8 Mustang thanks to a better suspension setup and much less weight on the nose.
84-85 SVOs are down about 30 hp from the 85 1/2-86 models.
The downside is torque. I'm going to sell mine as soon as I can find a good 86-93 5.0 to replace it. I use it as a daily driver and when you leave a stoplight, you're driving a low compression 4 banger. Once the boost hits, they haul ass, but it sucks having to rev the snot out of it just to keep up with traffic.
Produced from 84 - 86. 4 cyl turbos, Eruo styling. They're petty neat I guess. Not many around. The SVO was the first production veh to use 16in wheels, it was the first mustang to have 4 wheel disc brakes. The headlights and nose were the basis for the change in 87.
I have read that they're pretty fast for what they are. They were faster than the Gt's in 84 and 85. I have also read that the turbo parts are easily upgradable for more power.
They're unique. I'd pay 3-4000 for one depending on milage and condition.
Theres a whole set of forums dedicated to SVOs. Check it out. :thumbup

Ford put some nice features on them , but made them UGLY .
I used to see a few them in the late 80s driving around smashed up .
Nobody fixed them .
Not popular when they were new .
After 3 years ford gave up on them .
Most people wanted 5.0s .
Thats were the money was at .
Who needs good handling when your mostly going light to light ?
I've heard about bad wiring problems with them too .
Yeah, the GTs were quite a bit cheaper, and almost as fast. If that tells you anything. I dissagree with 79 Cobra about the looks of them though. They were pretty far ahead of the styling curve. I'd own one.
