My friend wanted to buy this honda civic hatchback for like 3500. I thought this was way too cheap for a 1992 civic BECAUSE it had over 7 grand in body work done to it ( it had a whole wide body kit etc etc ) so i wrote the vin down and told him to go and buy a memebership to carfax and check it out. Well ti turns out the car had a salvaged AND junked title . so prety much he cant get the car insured for more than liability so he decided not to do it. Well since he had purchased carfac for a month i decided to check my car out. heres my dilemma

I purchased this car and i put 600 down and have been paying the owner 600 a month and i have 1 month left until its payed off. We wrote up a promisary note saying i would make payments and such. Well i got the car fax report and it said the car had a salvaged title and the the odometer had rolled over. The guy told me it only had 84,567 ORIGINAL miles and this said so on the flyer for the car. On 07/10/1994 the car had 95,976 miles when it was registered again and inspected. then in 07/05/2001 the car had 67,000 miles and then on 9/22/04 the car had 78,654. I drove the car when it had 84,567. The car now has 88,000 miles. Do u think this is grounds for a voided contract since he lied and told me the mileage was original and that it didnt have a salvaged title? I cant have inusrance over liability in my state because it has a salvaged title now. So should i try and take my money back and give him the car or what should i do? Am i pretty much stuck with it or what. ON the promissary note it says as is condtion. please help!!

Go to the police and file a report. Title fraud is a federal offense. Then, once the prosecutor's office contacts him, take him to small claims court for the maximum amount (there is a limit as to how much you can recover through small claims) and ask the judge to award you damages based on his fraudulant claims about the car's condition. You don't need a lawyer for small claims, just find someone who can file the claim for you like a legal secretary or paralegal.

Have you checked with your insurance company because I know some insurance companies will fully cover a restored salvage title vehicle. I live in Tucson,AZ and my Mustang is a restored salvage and I have it covered for around $8000.00 and only pay $40.00 a month, something to look into...

I just went through a lengthy search for the car I wanted, and I Carfax'd 18 mustangs. Of those, I'd say 70% had Carfax trying to tell me the odometer had an issue. I really believe the system of reporting miles/kilometres is flawed slightly. I used another local ( ICBC ) search and all of the cars I checked were in fact fine.

If you have access to a state or local search on VIN, I'd do it, as I find Carfax only good for determining Salvage, original destination, and if its failed emissions throughout its life.
