Default Totalled Mustang GT convertible

Help.... Last week my 91 Mustang GT convertible was tottalled. The other driver was at fault and his insurance company is Geico. While waiting for the insurance company's total, I did some checking on replacements. The adjuster called today with the total. OMG they only want to give 4900.

The Mustang was in very good condition. It had recently been painted. It had new Pirelli tires. It had a 303 motorsport cam 5.0 liter engine. Shift kit transmission, 373 gears bbk Hpipe with cats.

The only thing I knew it needed, would have been a new top next summer. It was garage kept and never driven in the winter or rain (a couple occasions, it was caught in the rain). It only had 73,000 original miles.

It was my baby. And there is no way I can replace it for 4900. Any suggestions. Or anyone know where I can find a comparable Mustang gt convertible for 4900. Please help it is so depressing that someone else's carelessness is going to cost me thousands of $$$. I cannot afford to replace it and I cannot spend a summer without it.

Thanks

I fought with State Farm for almost a year over my totalled GT. They did everything from lie to my face to deny coverage on the car.

Best bet, see if you can negotiate keeping the car at that price. Of course, try to get more money, but that rarely works, so if you get the check, and keep the car, without paying the 20% to keep it, youre in good shape.

Sorry to hear about that. How bad is the car?

last year i was talkin to a guy i hadn't seen in a while and he had a vw??? it got totaled and he said that the insurance lowballed him liek crazy so he photocopied all the adds he could find with cars that had his mods out of the autotrader and stuff (i'm not sure what those cars could come with hehe) and brought it in to the insurance and got them to raise their price like 3 grand. i dunno if he was tryin to be the big man or if its diff in canada (i know ins here are weasels who'd sell their moms for a profit) but its worth a shot cuz they are out to help themslves and don't give a rats a$$ about normal people and it makes me sick that they try to screw people. good luck!

Canadianstang's idea is right - get ads for comparably equipped/conditioned cars as evidence your car is worth more. You want to look at Mustang Trader, EBay, etc. - good luck, and FIGHT

Whatever you do. Do not release your car until you settle on the price. That is the last thing. Once they get rid of your car you loose you bargining chip! GOOD LUCK!!

I'd try to get the car back, do you have it already? If not, someone is paying
storage on it. Is it drivable? Call some bodyshops and tell them exactly what
you've posted here. You may find one that will work with you. When my '92
was hit in June, it was totalled, but Progressive still gave me like $3300.00
or something like that - and the car. It probably cost me about five hundred
of my own dollars, but it's fixed now. And someone else backed into it-so
I may end up with several hundred $ in my pocket - I can fix this one, as it's
a small dent. The guy who fixed it before said "Progressive wouldn't give a
nickle to see the last supper with the original cast", but he liked State Farm.
Progressive was easy for me to deal with, but body shops hate them. State
Farm is a beeyotch for the motorist to deal with, but body shops love them.
Good luck. I hate geecko - their commercials are very annoying. I hope you
take those SOBs to the cleaners. Didn't you say your shoulder was hurting?:thumbsup

I thought it was his neck???? Seriously thought I would definitely fight, get the nada value, because it always seems to be high, while kelley blue book is ridiculously low. It would only value your car at like 2800, which is retarded. nada is 5200 average, and 6100 high, use that as a bargaining tool too, also just like every body else said, print off autotrader's and stuff. Berat em with a paper or two if you have to, good luck and i hope everything works out sorry man.

Sorry for the loss Gina, but I am an underwritter for an insurance company and maybe this will help.

An adjuster doesn't take into consideration any modifcations that you may have.. insurance company could have declined your claim based on the mods that you had, trust me I know the only thing I can suggest to you is, demonstrate by ways of receipts, work orders etc that you had this in the veh and they can/usually will offer more depending on what your receipts state. $4900 doesn't suprise me, in all honesty you were lucky they offered that. You can definately go to Ebay, auto trader and show them what a car "WITHOUT" these mods go for, and again, demonstrate by way of receipts that you have had these mods installed, and generally they will offer a bigger amt. Rule of thumb "NEVER TAKE THE FIRST OFFER"

pz~

Thanks everyone for all your help. We do not have the car. It is still in storage where it was towed. We would like to have it, but they told us we would have to pay for it. We had a friend who works with restoring Mustangs look at it and he said he would not repair it under any circumstances. It took a hard hit on the driver's side. The car does still have a lot of good parts on it. Most of the mods were done when we purchased the car. We have had it since 93 so I doubt we have any records of the few mods we did. I've been looking everywhere online at the GTs with the fox body forsale and the ones I've found are very far away (even those are $1000 + more than the 4900) or a lot more than 4900. I'm pretty particular about what it looks like as well. It must also be triple black and of course it must be a convertible. I'm not particular about the mods because they can always be added, but that would come from my pocket because there definately will not be any left over to do that. It surpises me that insurance companies can do that. If thier client causes the accident, they should do anything to make it right. I feel they should be the ones who hunt and find one exactly like the one totalled. Or they should pay to have one put together like the one totalled. I think it would be a little different if it were my own insurance company. Oh well, I'm back from vacation now and the adjuster is supposed to call on Monday. He said he would check his local papers for one like the one that was totalled. LOL good luck. I don't think he has a clue as to what he got himself into. I told him if he could do that I would be happy. So we shall see from there. Thanks again for all your help. Any other suggestions to have before he calls back would be greatly appreciated.

My advice is to buy your old one back from the ins. co. Should be less than
a grand. Then you can transfer your mods to the new one, and part out the old
one and bring in some more $$$. Good luck finding the black interior - wait, you
already have one. It shouldn't be too hard to switch out. I probably could have
doubled my money if I'd parted mine out, but I couldn't bear to do that. And I
sure as 'ell wasn't gonna let someone else part it out.
