Default What's the concensus on synthetic oil?

Good? Bad?

I need to get my oil changed and I'm thinking of using the synthetic stuff (93 notch, automatic).

What are the opinions in here?

Good IMO, you just have to justify the additional cost to yourself. If you don't have any leaks with conventional I would switch. I switched my stang to synth right after I bought it (45k) and I put the wifes pathfinder on it when we bought it (188k on the clock). I even use the stuff in my winter beater. It's expensive (in comparision to conventional), so you have to willing to fork over the extra cash.

Only oil I will use. Put it in a Hi-pro. engine, ran the piss out of it for 7,000 miles, took it apart to have the heads angled milled, it still had the hone patterns on the cylinder walls. Sold me, now I'm a lifer, and I have never had any engine problems. The transmission on back is a different story though!

Cool Synthetic Oil A++

Check out these links for some quick answers:

http://royalpurple.com/engmasters/emc04.html

http://royalpurple.com/techa/whyrpa.html

http://royalpurple.com/arta/arta.html

http://royalpurple.com/techa/faqsa.html

By the way, Royal Purple is now offered at Pep Boys for around $5.99 per quart. Usually $1 more expensive than Mobile 1 which is also a good oil.

Amsoil is also a very good product: https://www.amsoil.com/performancete...971/index.aspx

Redline synthetic lubricants are also dynomite products:

Hope this gives you enough info on synthetics. My advice, USE IT!

I like Mobile1, make sure you use a synthetic filter also.

Alas, it's actually LESS expensive if you keep it in for as long as it will last. Sythetnic oil WILL last longer than conventional oil. So the extra upfront cost is a wash if you extend the drain intervals.

True, but I still change mine at 3000 or less. Habit I guess.
