hey sup? sorry, i know this isn't the right forum for this, but i don't trust the rest of the people like i trust you people, plus i couldn't find the right place to post this, anyways, my question is this, i was having an argument with a friend, i was looking at a 427 cobra jet, early model, like a late 60's early 70's and i like them, my friend likes the 69 boss 429, our argument was which would be faster in the quarter mile and which is a nicer car, so it's kinda a double question, it's sorta what's your choice, if u could have one or the other, putting acual value aside, which do you think looks better, sounds better, which would you rather own and drive? aswell as which is accually faster?

The 427 was NOT a Cobra Jet, and just a handful, if any Ford Mustangs came from the Ford factory with a 427 in 1968 only. The 428 Cobra Jet is a torquey engine, and as delivered from the factory was actually quicker in the quarter mile, due to a small carborator and a rev limiter on the BOSS 429. With just under 1000 Boss 429's made in both 1969 and 1970, and quite of those turned into drag cars, a concours BOSS 429 is a highly sought after collector car that demands a premium price. The value of a Cobra Jet will differ, depending on the body style, options, and year of the car. The 428 was available as a 68 1/2, 68 and 70 model. The rarest of the bunch are the 68's. The most vaulable Cobra Jet is the 1968 Shelby GT500KR convertibles, which can go for as much or more than a BOSS 429. Over all, the BOSS 429 is a better car since the front end geometery was re-aligned to produce the best handleing big block Mustang built and can easily be modified to produce 500+ horsepower, but due to the exotic parts, is harder to maintain, and does not get the same milage as the 428 cobra Jet.
im almost sure i read somewhere that some magazine, either car and driver or motor trend or one of those put slicks on a boss 429 when they were testing it just for fun and ran low low 12s!

yup! found it... in the magazine, "40 years of mustang" (from the editors of mustang monthly and mustang and fords). it says "the boss cars were the new darlings of the performance set, with the boss 429 at the top of the pile. but when the chips were down, the 428 cobra jet was actually almost as fast-and cheaper. on slicks, the boss '9 came to life as a drag platform with motor trend taking the mammoth-motored car to a best of 12.3 at 112."
also, a guy in my home town owns the 2nd lowest documented mileage boss 429 mustang in the world. its friggin BEAUTIFUL, still smells like a new car inside...

12.3@112 wow, that's fast but slow.... i am used to going like 12.4@101 in the malibu i used to race ( i know, but it was a free car to drive)
but yeah, so which do you vote for for accual personal opinions?

they had a big block muscle car shootout on dream car garage on speedchannel with a 454 chevelle, 390 amc, boss 429, 426 cuda? and a few more the boss took the top numbers. it was everything tho like braking,1/4 mile, speed thru the pilons and stuff. it was freakin awesome!!! seein the msutang smoke the tires hehe. the guys were sayin that the boss was one of the most underrated cars. the cars were bone stock same as from the factory, and peter klute? drove the hell out of them. it was great if u get the chance to see it i would. i guess the carb on the boss is actually smaller than the one on the 302. years ago there was a show that a guy had built a boss 429 that beat sport bikes lol i think it had 900 horse? he said it wasn't very hard to do because it was pretty much a race engine mainly the carb and exhaust and blueprinting? i'm sure he did more hehe. cobra jet and boss are both awesome cars but i would want the boss although i wouldn't complain hehe

I SAW THAT SHOW!!!!! yeah it was awesome, they were saying the boss was better cuz u could get the revs up better with the standard than the auto that the dodge had... yeah, i personally like the cobra jet better because it is the mustang fast back rather than the notch which the boss is, if i'm not mistaken...

Hell yea I saw that show too! But I'm sorry to say but in the Chevelle's defense it was an auto and only had 3:31 gears. I think with a 4 speed and different gears the Boss might have went down. Man I would trade a limb for that Boss though, as long as it wasn't my right arm or leg.

ahhh but the chevelle came with 3.31's and the auto, did it come with a 4 speed factory, or was it special request only? i know it's kinda an odd question for the years we are talking about.. but i don't know this type of thing too well
