A few years ago I bought a '91 Mustang LX, it ran all right but the guy who had it before me replaced the stock 4 banger with a 5.0 from a '93 cobra. The rear end seems to be really messed up and when the car shifts it kicks (he put a shift kit on the car but the car kicks A LOT.) Because of that my grandmother wanted me to buy a new car to drive out to AZ (I moved from NY) so I got a 2004 Sentra SE-R Spec V (it's a nice car but it's no mustang ) Now that I'm back in NY I got my mustang back (sort of) and seeing it in the driveway makes me want to sell my Sentra and fix the mustang, but I don't know if it's worth it (I have the nissan and I've bought a ton of parts for it like a header, exhaust, cold air intake, cams, balance shaft removal kit, motor mount inserts, all kinds of stuff.)
Anyway that's my story, and my question is, how would I go about parting out a mustang? The engine was just rebuilt, has 7,000 miles on it since then, I have headers, flowmaster exhaust, MSD ignition kit, motorized seats from some year mustang (they're in perfect shape.) Is it worth taking everything out and selling it one by one? How do you even ship an engine block? Should I sell the engine and any other heavy items locally?
personally if its in running condition i would sell the motor locally, even list it on ebay so ppl can come see it run and its worth more like that. then tell the guy he can have the block when you get it out and start listing everything on ebay. The little things on these cars bring good $. i think i got 70 bucks for just the front brackets. i havent found it to be worth the $ or aggrevation to ship huge things like motors, trannys or rear ends. Dont hack stuff up taking it apart and keep things together. I sell the fuel rails w/ injectors etc and they bring good money. it is def. worth breaking things up to a point, but i dont like getting too crazy and selling each individual piece. Put it on ebay and put it in your sig that you are parting a 5.0 on ebay.
Thanks, now how hard is it to take out the motor, seperate it from the tranny and do all that? I think the tranny is basically worthless but I dunno, I know the rear end is good it's really new, and it's got posi.
Well, if you do decide to part it, PM me, I'm looking for some (mostly) smaller int/ext parts. Is it a hatch or notch?
As to shipping the big stuff, as noted above, I would imagine it is a pain, since (esp) for the engine, you'd have to palletize it, and get it somewhere that they can get a lift in it, plus the buyer would have to do the same. (I really hate to say it, considering I'm looking for a 5.0l motor too) But your best bet would be to stipulate that the buyer come and pick it up, etc. or sell it locally.
As to the tranny, you might at least be able to sell it as a core, and if the rears good, thats pretty much guarenteed to move.
Just my .02

rear end complete-125
auto tranny-150
5spd-350ish
shortblock-125
gt wing-60
gfx-150
other things that can bring good money
good tweed or black door panels-150 for both
the section of center console w/ working ashtray is worth 75 to most ppl
If you're gonna part it out Pm me too. I am also looking for some small interior parts and stuff. Just so you know too, if you sell stuff over here on the west coast, you will definitely get more for it. Partially do to generally higher minmum wage (especially in Washington) and partially because these cars are much rarer here. People charge waaayyyy too much for them. Good Luck man.
