First of all through that 195 as far as you can into the nearest dumpster and go buy a Milodan or Mr Gasket high flow 180 thermostat and make sure you get all the air out of the system turn the heat on when you fill the system up,i bet your driving around with an air lock.good luck.....

Join the hoses at the back where the heater core use to be.Then your making an open loop.Use some copper pipe or something and join the the hoses together and the air should come out.Make sure you get that Mr Gasket or Milodan thermostat, the rest are junk.

I'd go with a 160 t-stat and use a rad additive (water wetter or similar) the stuff works. Make sure you follow the directions. You can't use much coolant.

Make sure your elec fan is coming on when its supposed to. Use a therm or just use your dash gauge, if its not coming on till your over 200, u either have it set to high or its defective. I have an electric fan on mine, it comes on at 160.

Make sure you have good flow through the rad (flush might help if its clogged). Check the front of rad and make sure its not clogged with dirt/bugs etc.

Engine timing and/or a blown head gasket can cause overheating to. Do you have to add coolant/water?

Default it's prob simpler than you think.

I had a similar prblem with my 95 gt and all it took was to take out the radiator and use a compressor to blow out all of the built up crap out of it. Now it runs as cool as it did when it was new.

I have the same problem, and have come to conclude the gasket is at its last stages.........so just check flow of water, how old is the water pump, rad..ect.... and its a must with that mr. gasket therm.180..trust me , it keeps my car cooler than any other one........<and i think i tried them all!!!hehe.

and one last thing.....my car was stolen and when i got it back it was completely stripped.....so just make sure you have the black valance under you radiator to keep the air from flowing directly under the car.....it actually did help my car, well when i modified one....last but not least, myself included...get a better temp guage..... so with that.....good luck....

I met a guy who was a representative for wyotech who came to my auto class while I was working on my POS grand prix, and he said that he has gotten bad thermostats 5 times... they just didnt open even though they were brand new.... he said he now puts some water in a pot on the stove and cranks it up to advertised opening temp and drops in the thermostat....

If it pops open it is working... lol.... he was a strange man... but id imagine it would work.

Try changing your coolant temp sensor?

Default I had the same problem.

When I first got my 1988 GT the temp. sensor would spike within the first 5 minutes after starting. I replaced the thermostat, radiator, and the water pump. I also bypassed the heater core.....actually i broke the heater core. After all that my temp. would still spike once in a while. It turns out the ground to the firewall was loose and affecting all my gauges. Check that. If not it does sound like maybe you still have air in the coolant system or a bad water pump or temp. sensor. To correct air issues, open radiator cap and let run till it circulates a couple times adding Prestone 50/50 if/when it goes down. To check water pump, let run for 10-15 minutes till hot and squeeze the upper radiator hose. As you release it you should feel coolant flowing through it if your water pump is working. To check the temp. sensor, while running unplug it, let run for 10 seconds and replace. It should reset. That's about it. Coolant systems are pretty simple but can be a pain in the ass. Hope I helped.

Cjray, is onto something! The guage is crap. Check your engine when warm w/ a laser temp reader. Most of the time the gauge is wrong. If its reading right, then try buying a 180* Mr. Gasket thermostat and a flush. You can start boiling water and use a thermometer to check when thermostat opens. To remove air: 1) fill system 50/50 2) start 3) leave off cap until water starts circulating, 4) w/ cap still off squeeze the upper and lower hoses a few times 5)refill 6)install NEW cap. Let us know how it goes...

Oh yeah, dont use anything less than a 180 as your computer reads car is @ operating temp @ 175!

yea i wish it was just a inop sensor or wiring, but when it gets hot i start to lose oil pressure and engine smokes and when i say smokes i mean its like somethin is boilin somethin serious, i have yet to been able to check it out maybe this weekend if its nice enough to get it out the garage. since the garage is not @ my house the weekend is pretty much the only time i can get to checkin... thanks for the assistance guys, i'll be sure to check all your ideas out.
