Default What's a good crate motor for a twin turbo setup?

I'm thinking of either rebuilding the motor, or buying a crate engine. Right now I have a 5.0 from a '93 cobra in my '91 LX. I don't know how well it can handle twin turbos and I don't know what's been done to the motor (I bought the car with the motor in it and I know the motor's been rebuilt.)

I know nothing about rebuilding a motor or what parts I need for that or anything like that. I'd like to know what to tell the guy at the shop to do. My goal is 600hp with twin turbos, and I'd like an engine that'd use EFI, not a carburetor. Anyone have suggestions on what motor would be good or what parts I'd need to get for my motor now so that it could handle that? Oh, what else do I need to upgrade to handle the 600hp? I'm thinking about getting a Tremec T-5, is that good or do I need something stronger?

You'll need something a hell of a lot stronger than a T-5 to handle 600 HP. Those T-5s are only good until about 300 HP... needless to say I'm over that with mine and I've already grenaded the synchro in second gear.

I'm going to same route as you, so here is my suggestion. Buy your twin turbo, run an unagressive boost on your current setup until it goes KABOOM! Then just by a new engine. (And by the way, what company are you deciding to go with for that setup?)

You can get that engine to about 500 HP without doing anything else to stabilize it. There was an article about a twin turbo setup this guy had on his Fox Body. He dyno'd at 550 HP, but the block wasn't completely stock. He had something from D.S.S. to help get him to that level.

As far as crate motors go... don't buy one from Ford... just don't. D.S.S. makes good ones, but I am not sure of any other companies.

your going to need an aftermarket block, like R302 or Dart. A stock block could only go up 500hp and thats the max. I would also get a stroker kit either a 331 or 347 from DSS, Pro Power in florida has great deals on stroker kits as well. And check out Turbomustangs.com and you could get an idea on what to look for on price on turbo kits.

Hmm ok I checked out DSS and sent them a request for a quote (put in what I wanted and I'm hoping to get some good news. Also, I'd really rather not blow my current engine, it has 17,000 miles on it since being rebuilt so selling it is an option now (but not if I blow it.) Would a Tremec TKO transmission be good for 600-700 hp? What kind of transmission would you recommend for that? I'd really like a manual setup.

Here's what happened to the TKO in my car:

1. broke the keyways that hold the cluster gears on

2. broke 3 teeth off of third gear

3. damaged the cluster gear when thrid gear broke

4. spiral cracked the output shaft

The TKO didn't hold up behind my S-Trimmed 331. But . . I am launching a 3800 pound car at 5,000 rpm on slicks. I'm going automatic next time around.

Aww, two different opinions. I really want manual (it's going to be a daily driver and even though I live in NYC I love driving manual, plus I save on gas) but I know the fastest dragsters use automatic's. Does anyone think the TKO can handle 600 hp on a daily driver that'll be run at the track maybe once a month?

It all depends on how hard you launch/shift and how much your car weighs. You won't be "saving on gas" with 600hp . . lol . . . but, driveability is better with a stick, IMO.

If you want a TKO, call D&D Performance of Holcomb Motorsports and tell them what your plans are. A new TKO 600 might hold up.

As has been mentioned, for 600HP you can forget about a stock block, unless you like driving a time bomb, and aftermarket blocks are expensive. If it was me, and I wanted a turbo setup to produce 600HP, I'd start with a 351W shortblock, maybe a 393 stroker, which wouldn't need as much boost to reach your goal, and therefore would live longer. It would also be cheaper than starting from scratch with an R302 or Dart block. But that's just my opinion.

Taken from the www.turbomustangs.com website, http://www.modularmustangracing.com/ for the transmission, under Products.

Like others have said, read up on the turbomustangs.com site....excellent information.
