It was merely a thought I ran across. I'll be placing a few upgrades on her at the end of July... finally time for that major cooling system upgrade, among other things...
I've decided to throw some 4.10s in the back of my rear differential and I ran this idea by a friend of mine. He went off on how I need to upgrade to a Positronic ? rear end and how that Limited Slip could use an upgrade... it got me wondering.
Is this something I should look into? Is it a good upgrade to do on that ol' Fox?
And, if so, in your experiences or through word of mouth, what's a good differential to upgrade to? Places I might be able to find one, cheap? Good companies, makers, types, etc...?
And, finally..
Is this a difficult job to do? Is it something I might be able to do on my own? Any other opinions you might be able to add?
I can't foresee myself rebuilding the Rear Differential if it's a difficult task, mind you I'm still learning about working on Cars. If it's an easy enough job to do with a manual by my side and it's worth it to rebuild instead of purchase new, then I wouldn't have an issue.
when i had my 89's rear done, i already had 3.73 gears, they purchased the rebuild kit for the trac-lock through them and labor and all was 400 bucks. setting up a new rear setup isnt that hard if your willing to pay close attention to the manuals. setting the backlash properly and putting the correct amount of shims in for the diff is the main key you have to worry about. proper tools is a must also. if your not comfortable with doing it and want it done fairly quick i would just purchase the gears and diff of your choice and just have a shop install it. saves time and a costly mistake.

I know, that's what the advice of a bunch of people said to me. However... how am I going to learn about working on my car if I give it to a shop to do it?
Besides this Auburn Differential, are there any out there anyone else think I should invest in?
Rebuilding the rear is somewhat technical. You really need to know how to seat bearings properly, you'll need a dial indicator and mic, and you'll need to know how to use them. I'd recommend a how to video. Google Paul Zank you'll find a site that rents a how to video on diff rebuilding. Watch the video if your cofortable with the steps that need to be done you could give it a shot. I'd recommend replacing all the bearings while your in there. If your just going to go with the trac lok unit and the stock 28spline axles, I'd recommend a complete rear assemb- you can get a brand new rear from cjonyparts with 3.73's for 800bucks. It has everything except for axles and brakes, hard to beat. If your not going with the traclok posi, rebuild what you've got- auburn is a good unit- detriot locker, torsen are some other names. If your going with a better posi unit, upgrade the 28 spline axles with 31 spline (moser or superior). You might as well get rid of the junk stock control arms with aftermark arms- buy something decent or don't bother. Once you have some good arms you can take the quad shocks off. To top it off - while your back there - you'll need to reenforce the torque box. I'm doing the same thing right now on my car- I'm upgrading my springs and shock too. If your planning on adding more power to the car, you really want to upgrade to 31spines axles, control arms and springs and shocks. Power is useless if you can't hook up
