Yea so, my dad and I were considering buying a 5.0. I was wondering what yall think about them?
How does the 5.0 compare to muscle cars today. Like will a modded 5.0 beat a new edge GT (03'ish)??
I know almost nothing about fox body perfomance, any input would be welcomed .
How would a 5.0 sound with headers/flows?
What should i look for when buying one, whats good milage for a 5.0?? When do there engines usually go out? Would we be better off just buying a GT sn95 model (1994-1998). CAn a 5.0 even compete with 05+ v6s... GTs??
my 89 lx convert hes 150k on it and it runs new i all so have a 90 gt convert its got 106k on its got a comp cam off road x pipe and flowmaser cat back it sonds amazing if you can do the work your self i say about a 1000 wort of boltons you will take out a 03 mustang with a fox

A SN95 GT is a 5.0.
An un-modded 5.0 cant compete with an 03-06 model GT. A modded one on the other hand can, easily. (I can tell you that from experience.) But that all depend on how much money you want to put into the car.
A 5.0 motor will last a long time, my main concern is oil leeks from the heads and valves. make sure the engine compartment, and motor look clean. check a plug or 2 to see if they are nice a white or wet. this will indicate a clean combustion chamber. next check the body for straightness, and the torque boxes for cracks its only a uni body. ask about mods, and problems with the car. check the oil to see how well the car was taken care of. look for any sign of a crash. buy it from a little old lady heehaw. other than that you will need to spend a good amount of cash to go faster! i forgot to add an old 5.0 does not compare well to to days cars. mostly brakes and suspension is the issue for 5.0 mustangs. with poor handling in rain and snow.
My mustang has approximately 300,000 miles on it with the stock original motor. My dad drove it about 60 miles to and from work for 12 years or so. It still runs decent, however that motor will be making way for a 351W in the near future. As far as buying a mustang, it all depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend. I would think you could find one for a few thousand dollars with decent milage. I probably wouldn't buy anything with over 150,000. Just check it out thoroughly. It may also be wise to have someone else look at the car for a second opinion.
yeah a 5.0 is really built ford tough, most late 2-300 thousand miles before anyone pulls them. A lot of people put new heads/intake/cams on a 150k block without any problems. With about 1-3K invested in motor/drivetrain you can take out an 03 on the track. It all depends what you use the money on. even if you find a 5.0 with oil leaks that doesn't mean it has a bad motor. remember your looking at 14 years up and older cars. A little tlc can bring her right back up to speed.

Alright guys, im really considering this... ok one more question. Insurance. If i was to keep my sn95 (v6) and buy a 5.0 would i still be paying full rate. For example: $160 for the sn95, and another $200 for the fox. I cant afford that... and i dont want to sell my sn95 intill i know i have a reliable 5.0 know what i mean...
So can i put it under pleasure r somthing and get a decent rate? Any experience with this.
I'll take pics and give yall info b4 i buy one. Appreciate yalls help...

The 302 was one of the best engines Ford Built. They stuck it right into those power-house Mustangs.
I'd say hop on one as soon as you can. They're amazingly versatile, extremely fun to play with, and can just ooze gobs of power if you have the cashflow to do it.
Ask truuble... his 10 second vert is no joke. (Too bad it's an SN-95 and not a FOX!)
My 2 cents says buy yourself a Fox-Body stang. There's a huge market for parts out there, plenty of selection.
Be sure to focus on the 89-93 year models. 89 is argueably the best. (Even though the 88s made in California also had MAF... that's a lot harder to find) First year for the Mass Air Flow system, last year for the Tilt Steering (Correct me if I'm wrong, boys) LXs had the least "weigh-me-down" options.
But, it's all about your choice.
As far as your insurance goes: it might be kind of difficult to maintain two cars on the insurance at once. Not that I'm telling you to do this, but... if you find an unmolested 4 Cylinder, Automatic and drop a V-8, 5 speed into it... the insurance company still thinks it's a 4 Cyl. They don't have to know!
Keep us posted on whether or not you get yourself a Fox.
I get to road test mustangs '96-'07 on a weekly basis. I have owned 2 Fox body
5 liters. I would take a fox 5.0 over any mustang '94-'04. I just took out an '04
stock GT the other day. No way this would have kept up to my '89 GT, even when it was stock. Any aftermarket exhaust makes them sound awesome. Especially when you add a cam. Up here in Canada people don't even consider a rebuild of
the engine ( except for upgrading purposes ) until at least 250 000 KM. ( that's about 150,000 MI. They Look great and they are super fun to drive. ( unless you have an automatic) Mods are affordable and way worth doing. Buy a Fox.

Well I can put my 2 cents in here..since iI have owned mine 16 years and counting.
I just came back from our yearly dragfest ran a best of 14.06 in the quarter ....thats still with factory cats and exhaust. I don't know how it compares to and unmodded V6 or late model GT or even an 05' + in 95% stock form.
Mind you this is in the bare bone LX coupe version....the best bang for your buck without a doubt.
Keep in mind the 5.0 is a pushrod motor and is very different than the 4.6
So take in what everybody else said . If your lucky enough to find a decent one for a reasonable amount of $$$ you will be in luck.
Happy Searching.

Alright guys my dad gave me the green light to start searching. My only problem now is i have about $500 in the bank lol. I'm in school and working so i'm making about $150 a week... so i would have to save up for like 6 months b4 i could get a decent fox. ORRR I could sell my 98 v6 stang. with only 27,000 miles on it... maybe get 7 r 8 for it... I would just hate to sell my stang and either one of two things happens.
A) Can't find a fox that i like with decent milage
B) Unknowingly I buy a molested fox and blow money on it ... then have to repair it r w/e.
Or I could get lucky and pick a winner
Any way, in my situation (17, senior in high school) I think it would be best if i just saved up and bought a fox (plus christmas, birthday, and graduation are all comming along soon enough...)
So then I would have the 5.0, and the sn95. That way i could go from there and have options. Thanks for your help guys, keep the advice and specs on the 5.0 comming though.
You Can Get One For About 2 Grand. Hp Is About 225 Stock.

hey godlik, if you are seriously considering buying a 5.0, go for it. they are wonderful, cheap to work on, and you can find parts for them pretty easy. you can probably find one that needs a little tlc for a reasonable price. look around. look on ebay and look at some of the cars on here as well.
