Default Cam for Mostly Stock 5.0

I'm looking to get a pretty good cam but i want it mainly for the loud idle, you know that really choppy loppy idle. i want the best sounding idle i can get. any suggestions?

I have a stock 5.0 with a 70mm throttle body and exhaust. the engine is brand new also.

I wouldn't go any bigger than a Trickflow Stage 1, or E303 Ford Racing cam. If you plan on keeping the stock heads and intake, than pretty much any cam you put in is going to cause a power loss. It does no good to have extra lift and duration if the heads are only going to flow what they were designed for. Not to mention the car will start having idle and vacuum issues if the the cam is too large.

If its just sound your looking for, than the cams I mentioned are probably the safest to run without risking a huge power or driveability loss.

any cam and your tb are a waste of money on a stock engine, in fact, the TB can cause power lose due to the intake opening is smaller....

When I was younger & didnt know crap about cars I had a stoch 305 chev engine & though a bigger cam would make me have much more power so I went out & got a nice new cam (on my stock engine) & managed to install it w/ a friend of mine & it ran like crap.a Yugo (w/a spark plug wire off ) would have beat me.I didnt forget that when I built my mustang engine.

A guy I know somehow got an X-303 cam to work with stock ported heads. He
says he didn't notch his pistons. Somehow this works. It has a Very choppy idle.
It also has TFS intake and a good exhaust, so it sounds mean and....gurgully?

the cam will work, but it is too big of a cam, too big of a cam can hurt performance.

Save the cam install for when you are ready to put in the heads and intake. It's a waste putting the cam in now, not to mention the fact that you might see some power losses.

you could put that money in alot better places to help performance. anderson ford motorsport sells real nice roller cams like his n3 n/a camshaft, it has a real nice lope to it. ( but he is an a-hole )

wasnt the b303 and E303 cams made for a mild stockheaded stang why back in the late 80's?. aagree with all above a bigger cam will push your power band up and, thats not what the stock heads are made for. although i feel a small cam with help some. I run a ecam with crappy e6 heads and, the E belive it or not it works well in that 2800-5000 rpm range boat loads of crazy TQ IF only i had a converter

True Mikey 5.0, but I would say more so with the E303 (my choice for the thread originator)back in the day the B could be a handful to tune right (rough idle etc..) but it was a good combo with the GT 40 Iron heads and intake, that setup would run low 13's all day long.

When I put my new 302 long block together, I knew it would be years, before I could afford the better heads. So, I ported the stock intake and installed an e303 cam. After a good dyno tune, fixing a stubborn vacuum leak, and replacing the idle air solenoid (attached) to front of throttle body, the last dyno produced a smooth idle and enough power for the time being.

Wow, another old post coming out again, seems like this is getting more common.

E cam is a great cam for an average Mustang, but there are way better cams out there. I swapped my e cam out a few years ago for a TFS Stage 2, and I'm way happier with that cam, however it works much better with my set-up over the E cam.
