Hey whats up? I have a Master's Degree in Teaching so maybe I can be of some assistance. Hope this helps?
If your comparing music and the mind what you should first do is research on what part of the brain responds to sound as well as sight -then compare to the rest of the senses since most are linked. Always start with the facts- go from general to specific to make your paper interesting or appealing to your audience.
Start with a basic topic and make sure your thesis statement can be proved vaild throughout your paper by examples-basically each paragraph can represent an example of your research so each person in your group can pick an idea.
Here's a thesis statement(two sentences): The ideology behind music raises significant question(s) in the rationale of the mind. The premise of this study is to ascertain the rational behind music and the mind in order to acknowledge the realtionship that exists. (Thses two sentence may be good for the end of your intro paragraph.
Ideas for paper-safety concerning volume, especially with younger crowds(By the way I' m 28- I m not putting down booming systems but every action does have an inverse or opposite reaction-something to think about)
Another example: One quick fact -our emotions are tied to memory. For example if you listening to a song on the radio in your car a memory could be sparked from a prior experience. While driving this could possibly casue one to daydream and lose focus on the road when one should be engaged on the task of driving-(however, be specific with examples froim research and site it!
Solid evidence first, then base your opinion off the research but remain objective so it doesn't turn into a persuasion paper.
You may find this late research also helpfulCHECK THIS SITE FOR RESEARCH
http://dsc.discovery.com/news/briefs...titasking.html
You could use this as another example.
You have a braod topic so I would make each person in your group agree on at least a central theme then brach out and try not to go too far off topic
Hope this helps bro
Tony

Another quick idea.
Make a list of the genre's of music and how each class within "our society" react to it meaning mood-like you stated.
I don't know if this would help but look up "Multiple Intelligences" on your computer-some research connects classical music to improving mathematical achievement-its kind of off topic but its a start to a paper linking music and mind(basic research)
By the way, what class is this for?
Also if you want to e-mail me the paper I could revise it for you.
Let me know
