Guys, this is actually very common because the threads can not be guranteed to start and end at the same place all the time. I know my S197's shifter was never really tight, it just got held in by the boot. It was threaded down on the shaft, but the boot kept you from rolling it aroudn too much. My hurst now has a jam nut that holds everythign in place. You thread the handle down to where you want it, then back the nut up against it, hold the handle and torque the nut aginst it.
You might try this to keep it where you want.
Another Shifter I has in a 97 Z28, came with circular spacers that you put in the shift ball itself so that it would tighten up earlier on the shaft. Just kept putting spacer in until it lined up properly.
Both of these are options, and on my S197, I did use some Blue Loc-tite. It doesn't give you too much trouble removing it, but does keep vibrations from losseinign it.
