I am deciding between heads and a new suspension. I think I am getting to that point where i can't add much more power w/ out proper suspension. Is this right? I know a guy selling really nice ARP heads for 950, and a new suspension would be right around there, a little less. Which do I do?> Or is there something else in the 1,000$$ range I could do..... Thanks

I think you mean AFR heads, sounds like a good price especially if there is any work done to them, do you know what size?
Its ture if you get a lot of HP you cant use it unless you got a good suspension, I don’t think you would have to have it for what you have but if you only have $1000 I might do suspension……..if you want the heads I would also do cam and intake at the same time and save some labor costs……

I don't know who it was, but someone on here once said the wisest words I've ever heard when it comes to modifying cars. "Make it stop, make it handle, then make it fast." There is so much logic behind it. I've taken that as a new motto for my mods.

X2! Its not fun having a car that goes fast that cant stop or steer!!!
heads! make it fast! your not fast enough to worry about steering or brakes or suspension! and when you do the heads, be it now or later... go with trick flows! much better HP for your buck!
I have 4inch drag tires on the front of my 5.0 and tens on the back and have out ran 2 cops with that setup sliding it around on back roads. I added more power and just steer with the rear weels instead of the fron't. It's alot of fun taking a side road, a( 90 degree trun) at 50 mph, but your car has to have the testies to pull you through it. It all just depends on what kind of driving you are wanting to do.

Did you eat a lot of paint chips as a kid?

OOORAAHH!!!
under normal circumstances, i would say suspension/brakes for sure. its the smartest thing to do without a doubt. HOWEVER, in this situation, thats a pretty darn good deal on some pretty darn good heads... i might have to say heads just because of the price... especially if the come with rockers...

Those heads seem to be really cheap. I would ask the guy if he would let you take them to a good machine shop and have them scaned and checked for breaks, cracks, trueness, and weak points. There must be a really good reason to let them go that cheap when he could ask twice as much.
I’m running a 375 hp combo on my 88 with stock suspension and breaks and can say its not that fun, the only thing I got out of it is a twisted axial.
It was not my intend to do the go fast before the suspension, but when I was dropping in a new tremec I also decided to change out the oil pump and discovered something that led me to do a rebuild before something bad happened, so I rebuilt it the way I wanted………..well someday I will get the right suspension but money is now a lot tighter then when I built the engine so only time will tell…….

hey, every one has there level of what fun is. so mine is sliding my car around corners and stuff. And it wasn't paint chips, it was laquer thinner......Honest.
"Make it stop, make it handle, then make it fast."
This is really a smart way to go. My ride has a 347 in it but with stock heads and intake. It's fast but not absurd. I have dumped my money into the suspension and it has proven to be the best decision I've ever made... ever. My gas mileage is manageable and as far as streetability goes, I have a very easy time driving it either fast or slow.
Don't forget, labor on installing the heads and getting your engine tuned right will end up running you way over a grand by the end of the day.
On top of being able to out drag a few people, taking a 'stang on a curvy road and never drop below 50 mph is an awesome feeling. Steeda makes great parts and you can even install most of their stuff yourself.
For around $1000=aluminum upper+lower control arms w/ bushings, shocks & springs. That combo has kept me happy and hopefully will continue to do so until I can afford a second car and kick my 347 up to 400+ hp.
