Default 1989 Fox 3.73's Finally Installed

I finally got my 3.73's installed and I'm not quit sure about them. I expected my rpm's to jump up considerably coming from the factory 3.08's but not that much. Now in 5th gear at 70 mph I'm sitting about 2600 rpms. Is that about normal? Also it's just so loud. It's gonna take some getting used to. How long does that take.

Coming home from getting them installed on the interstate I did about 55 because that kept the rpm's down where they used to be at 70. It's just a lot of noise to get used to. Do all the rpm's put more stress on the motor or can it handle it?

The only down side is since i'm turning more rpm's, more things in my car rattle than I knew were loose. I guess I know what my next project is, yay .

um, gears put you higher in the engines power band quicker than before, so if you wanted quicker acceleration then the 3.73 gear will get you there faster than before. quicker acceleration = quicker 1/4 mile ET times.
running higher gears will get you to your max HP faster than before.
PS. if you did not change the speedO for the transmission then your speedometer will not accurate. therefore it will look like your going 75 but you are really doing 65 or 70.

They recalibrated the speedo for me and it was only $160 with installation and everything.

The rpms do put more stress on the motor so try not to run it at high speeds for a long amount of time because the rpms will increase the heat in the engine and break the oil down quicker than at lower rpms. 373's are not too extreme for the street at all but still better to be safe than sorry.

I really like the difference from 3.08s to 3.55s on my car, it really helped the performance and yet the gas mileage didnt drop too much and it still Revs low enough to enjoy out on the highway.
