I'm looking at buying a Mustang, and I'm searching fairly specifically for either a grey or black interior. That eliminates alot of cars for me, and looking around, it seems there is now ( compared to when I owned my 87 ) alot of aftermarket reproduction parts that would allow me to change the interior color to black/grey, but only to a point.
While I can find carpets/seats/door panels and alot of smaller various trim, does anyone make the larger pieces, such as the rear quarters in the HB, the center console, and most importantly the lower dash pad. I see a ton of cars where that lower part is blue or red. ACK. I'd basically like to know if there is a route to redo the interior outside of painting some pieces to match, or digging through the junkyard?
As for paints, is there good quality ones now that can be used? The ones I tried thus far really leave alot to be desired.
The problem will be actually finding a black interior because they are in demand at junkyards. The suggestion is to find a decent interior and paint it yourself. I've found Krylon Fusion and Rustoleum Enamel to be the best rattle-can paints for interiors. I took my dash completely out in order to paint it, and letting it sit for a few days before you put it back is best.
Have you checked www.latemodelrestoration.com, they have just about anything you can find. If you don't find what you need, let me know. I've got all kinds of web sites or if you are determined enough, you can just search for 'em. They're everywhere.

Changing the interior seems like a lot of trouble to me but obviously you know what you want. I would buy after market everything you can and then either paint the rest or find someone with a crashed car that they will part out the interior.

my neighbor who is an airline pilot told me that there is a two part type paint for plastics that they use on airplanes to dye/paint interior pieces that is almost as good as having original colored pieces, he didnt remember the name of the stuff but it is out there. maybe with a little research you could find it
If you go to Autozone they will have the paint “dye” for plastic interior pieces. I have used them and they seem to work fine, just prep the surfaces just like the directions say.
I believe you will have to paint them as even new replacement pieces are neutral colors intended to be painted. And finding a black interior in a junk yard will be hit or miss on a fox, most you would find are the ones you wont want. Its not that hard to change over just document it with pictures we would love to see the progress…….

So , let me get this straight…..your Honda has 1.6 liters, whereas my bottle of Mountain Dew has 2?

-1988 Ford Mustang GT Convertible, 331 Trick Flow Stroker with a Tremec 3550....oh yea and a 1.6 liter V-TECH motor to work the convertible top.
A little late but this is exactly what I am doing right now too, I have the nasty Canyon Red in my 88 GT. I have no problem doing the work taking things out and painting them, but I too want to find the best stuff. I looked up the paint on 50resto and it doesn't say really what it exactly is. I don't know if it's any of the types mentioned here. I just want to do it right the first time.
Also, on mustangsunlimited.com they have all the carpet and black headliners etc.. and they call it black 801. Is this a specific mustang black? because 50resto just says black, or in some cases you can select your car's year color of black. The reason I'm concerned is I don't want to have two different tones of black in my car if I buy something from one site, and something from another. It would be nice if the new carpet, seats etc would match the paint as well... Any input would be awesome! thanks!
I don't think the black is a specific black, it seems to be for all years 1979 and up. They didn't even put a black interior in until 1990 and it was called ebony. Finding a black interior in a salvage yard is like winning a contest, as soon as it comes in, it's taken out and sold probably the same day. Too popular. You can get interior dye and paint, it just needs the proper prep for it to adhere. You can use Fusion paint for plastics, after about 2-3 days, it will not come off, flake off or bleed. My brother used it on a few console areas and it really works.

Sweet, I'll take a look into that paint, as long as it dont chip I don't mind the work. I suppose black is black! thanks
I can say I haven't seen Fusion chip, flake, or fade at all. It's like it becomes part of the plastic itself. It actually bonds with it. You can find it anywhere, even Wal Mart of all places. I understand about wanting the black to match, I used to be a color matcher and there are different blacks, but for our year cars, there isn't too much difference so you should be alright.

Here is how mine came out Mounty. I went from the red to black on the dash, and to grey on the rest along with building my own rear seat delete. I've found the Krylon Fusion works the best, and it's cheaper at Wallyworld.
Yeah I found that stuff! it looks pretty good and I read a bunch of good things about it, i'm going to try it. It says no sanding so that's kind of nice, less work. I just hope it's not too glossy...

that is looking really good, are you going to convert the rest of the car over also?
Ahh I forgot to ask! I went to pick up some krylon Fusion paint and they had Satin, and Gloss. I wasn't sure which one I was supposed to use, or would be better for my interior? I guess I don't know how either dry once applied.
Orielly's has a good selection of plastic or vinyd dye, I am building a 1972 Mustang with Vermillion red interior and have purchased at least ten spray cans and it matched the upolstery I ordered from Texas Mustang perfectly. They have a great selection of colors. No I don't work for a parts house.
