Default Ford factory horsepower ratings?

Are the Horse Power ratings for ford motors just for insurance/gas people.

I was dissapointed to find a 351w only had 230 factory.

Depends on what year it is. Chevy had some 350s in the 70s rated at 155hp. Pontiac had 400s chime in at 225.

Smog motors were prettly low on the HP ratings, some are just in the design fo the induction system and Cam. You may have a 230hp Factory moor that makes 300lb-ft of Torque. Won't rev very high, but will pull very nicely.

The '69' 351 was rated at 250 w/ 2 bbl and 290 w/4 bbl. In '72' the rating dropped (gross vs net plus other changes) to 153-161. Compression ratio dropped almost two full points. Like Kyle said, depends on the year.

Yes it does matter what year it is. And the ratings were also slightly influenced by insurance rates, even up to today they are.

Yes, I believe the LS1 of the early 2000s was the biggest culprit of this. Guys with Camaros were buying a 305hp rated engine and getting 310 to the wheels with a CAI and cat-back... then they drop them in the 04 GTO and Magically they are rated at 350hp and all along rated at 345 in the Vette
