Question Convertible Top Frame Question, 1989 Mustang LX

OK...here is one for the money!!!

Is there anyone making or knows how to correct the convertible frame problem where it breaks at what I call the elbow. The forward most part that pivots up and then back on top of the rest of the frame to close down. Basically located to what could be refered as between the A pillar and B pillar.

I have spoken with friends that say that was a bad joint/elbow that seems to break alot on the Fox Body Mustangs.

So if anyone has any help or wisdom (no get a coupe or crap like that), I and others would be thankful.

Same problem here, mines broke on both sides. I was told that it can be welded but trying to find someone who can do it. I just went and bought a another stang with a blown motor and I'm taking off the top frame along with other moulding pieces.

I have this same problem on my '89. After doing some research with a prolific welder, I found the metal used on the fox bodied conv. tops is too porous to weld. The only way to temporarily repair it is to rivet a small bracket into the break section. Keep in mind, though this may be a cheap fix, it would be a much more efficient and time saving job to replace the entire top.

Hope this helps.

I too have had the problem. Mine had rivets, but it broke again. So - I bought another frame. :-(
