Unhappy Fox Body Speedometer Problem

Hey Guys...I looked around and couldn't find any other threads pertaining to my exact problem. I took my dash and what not off the other day so that I could do the GT Headlight fix...they've been shutting off for years. I took the clear plastic piece off that goes in front of the gauges because I wanted to clean it up nice. I'm selling the car and detailing it as much as possible. I need to be able to afford a lot with the money I get from it....Anywho...I hooked up the lights and everything was fine. We test drove it to get a buddy something to eat and everything was fine on the way there as far as I remember. When I got back in the car it looked like a speedo in dire need of viagra. It points down. It's about 1/16 of an inch from touching the button to reset your mileage. It gets power...it goes up as you drive but at about 70 miles an hour (I'm Guessing) its at about 35-40 and goes back down. It doesn't bounce. If I manually move it with my finger it springs right back to where it goes. Does anyone know A) How serious this is....B)How to fix it? I thank you all....take it easy guys.

Sounda like you need to redo the connection in the dash. It probably isn't fully engaged.

Which wires would they be? Where do the connect to? It's weird for this to happen like 10 hours after doing the lights...has to be related to something I did. I hope its not from having the plastic peice off from protecting them...doubt it but who knows.

The speedometer is cable driven. Try reaching behind the cluster, and pushing it into the speedo. Sounds like it's barely in.

So I went Back there and the speedo is connected all the way. This baffles me. Grrrrrrr. It gets power and goes up steadily according to speed it just has no stopping point...it doesnt stop right at the 0 like it should...instead it stops at the mileage reset. Any other suggestions...can't be that major...is there a fuse that could be blown? A way to take the needle out and put it at 0 and keep it there? HELP ME GOOD SIRS! Also Would the speedo be something I could have accidentally unhooked from its other loctation or loosend by running the wire through the firewall grommet?

Ah, if you look closely at the gauge face, you'll see that there is a hol near the zero. That's where the needle stop is supposed to be.

Is it just a little piece of plastic that can break off or is it something that could have came unthreaded and fallen out. Can't bne that big cuz I missed the hole when I looked for it yesterday.

I think it's actually rubber.

I pulled mine apart to but didnt have that problem but those needles can be moved very easly you can try just getting in there and turning it back to zero and see what happens.

How do I move the needle? Do I take it out then put it back in? I've tapped it with my finger and it just falls right back so there must be a way to set it to 0 and get it to hold
