Roller 306 with forged pistons, moly rings, tfs heads and a Kenne Bell 2.1 supercharger, question should I break in the engine with the supercharger installed or use a carb or another EFI.
If you were running a centrifugal supercharger, there definitely wouldn't be any issues running it with a fresh rebuild because it usually doesnt start making boost until you reach midrange rpm levels.
However a twin screw supercharger starts making boost at 1500-2000rpm and it makes full boost at that 2000rpm,instead of building boost as rpms increase, like a centrifugal supercharger does.Ive heard of alot of guys running a supercharger on a fresh engine,if theyve got the car on a dyno. That allows them to see what the engines doing,so they can control the fuel & timing values and put a proper tune in it.
In order to seat the rings properly, the engine needs a load put on it plus several wot pulls.I prefer doing wot pulls with just the engine itself, not with a supercharger, but plenty of guys have had no issues running it with a supercharger.Another thing that would put me at ease is if I could run a smaller pulley on the supercharger to get the boost pressure as low as possible, which I believe is 4-5psi on a Kenne Bell.Keeping boost that low would definitely help reduce the chances of ring sealing issues.
Eventhough I personally wouldn't run a supercharger on a fresh engine, I think youll be just fine as long as you keep your foot out of it,for at least 200-300 miles.
Good Luck on the project
