Bought a 92 5.0 and it has some go fast parts (previous owner did not know much about parts on car) and I wanted to come here for some info. So, apparently I have "SVO" engraved aluminum heads (GT40Y im assuming) and I would like to know if they have a CARB EO number or even smog legal in CA. Also, I can tell I have a cam because I can hear it...How would I confirm that short of pulling it out? Also has a MSD Pro Billet Dist and MSD 8.5mm wires...smog legal in CA? I looked at the exhaust manifold, and I see the JBA label on the headers and the CARB#, so im good there. Also...again...the car has a 2 catted h-pipe (unsure of brand) but im sure that wont pass visuals...anybody confirm that? And now! Does a 93 Cobra Intake Manifold pass visual? Oh yeah, I have the stock air tube with a cone filter at the end....good??
BTW, its already been smogged and I have transferred the name already (waiting on title with my name on it for CA) I just want to be prepared in 2 years come smog time.
Good thing out of all this...I found out I have an aluminum driveshaft lol
Ive got a partial answer.Info is scarce on the gt40y heads for some reason.I guess its because theyre an older head.I found the following post in a thread @ the corral. It doesnt list the CARB EO# though.
** Remember, the tubular upper and lower intake kit was part of the old gt-40 certified package that got (50state) carb and EO certification in the early 90's.Later the "Y" head was included as part of the certified package for the 94-95 cars.**
I know you stated youve got the Cobra intake, not the tubular gt40.If its the real Cobra gt40 intake, not the Explorer gt40 intake,it didnt have a CARB EO# because it was a factory direct replacement part & not an aftermarket part.Aftermarket parts are the only ones that require the CARB EO#.
The MSD distributer,if its part #8456,is NOT legal to run in Ca.It has no CARB EO#.Nothing was listed either way about the spark plug wires.
The aftermarket x/hpipes that use 2 converters have the correct materials inside them and the air tube is there that uses the smog pump, but its also NOT legal in Ca. and doesnt have a CARB EO#.
I haven't checked other manufacturers,but the 12" K&N conical filter is legal in Ca.The
CARB EO# is D-269-8.If youve got a different length filter or a different brand, youll have to look it up to check its legal status.
I believe cam lift can be checked with a dial indicater at the pushrod then once you get that measurement, multiply that number by the rocker arm ratio to get max lift figure. After you confirm the max lift, you have to match that to available cams for your year/make/model/engine to id which cam it might be.This still wont give you the duration & lca of the cam though.
Lets say you measure .311 @ the pushrod (x) 1.6 rocker arm ratio= .498" lift
Example: Ford Motorsport E303 cam= .498"
thanks for the info man! im going to print out that carb eo for my air intake filter which is 12 inches! cool!
and the cobra intake i have is not the one from the explorers, it has the cobra plaque if that makes sense, so im assuming i have the one form the 93 cobra...
