I would not allow anyone to port my heads unless it was either a CNC port job, or a hand port job complete with documented flow numbers. Inaccurate porting without numbers to back it up can result in uneven flows of fuel/air and imbalanced horsepower numbers from each cylinder and unbalanced pressures of exiting exhaust gases.
Leave it as cast by the manufacturer or get a measured port job, but nothing else.
I haven't seen new GT40Y's for that cheap (maybe I'm just shopping at the wrong places

I've seen them in the $900 range.
If that is the head that you like get it. Personally I don't like the GT40 heads.
Edelbrock has reworked their Performer and Performer RPM heads. I haven't priced them, but with improved flow numbers (haven't seen the #'s) combined with some of their other desirable features, this might be a good head to consider. They are described as being CNC profiled, not CNC ported. I'm not certain if there is a difference in these terms that they are using. I think that they are certainly worth a look though.
