Default 1988 Mustang Gt Steering Wheel Rocks Back And Forth

My Car Has Tilt Steering Wheel, But It Rocks In Every Direction A Little Kind Of Like The Bolts Are Loose.. But When I Pulled All The Covers Off, And Looked At It... When You Rock The Steering Wheel, All The Tilt, The Ignition?key Mechanisms, Turn Signal, And Etcmove With The Steering Wheel, Kind Of Like Its Loose At The Top Of The Steering Shaft, Maybe A Bushing Gone.... Any Ideas? And How Do I Get All That Stuff Off To Fix It......

The Bolt Is Tight That Holds The Steering Wheel On.....

But I Do Know That I Have Been Having A Problem With My Horns Going Off For No Reason, And I Am Wondering Now If That Is Why....

Default Horn

I has this same problem onmy 88 LX. I ended up disassembling the whole steering column clear down to the rag joint. I found a lot of loose bolts, and the rag joint was shot (its the rubbre donut that is located at the lower end of the steering shaft).

I re-installed everything, got it all tightened down (I had to add some lock washers to some of the bolts - their holes had wallowed out from driving the car with the gear loose).

I then got an alignment, and it was good to go for the next 2 years I owned the car (my brother has it now - hmmm, I'll have to ask him is the steering got loose again).

Careful with the tilt mechanism - it can get complicated getting it back together again. There were several times during assembly that I wished I had taken pics of it when DIS-assembling, so I would recommend you do that ocassionally.

Best of luck.

Could be. You could start by replacing the rag joint (its a cheap part) and getting an alignment.

Stacked rubber donut isolator that connects between the steering shaft to the steering box. It is a normal wear item, and if you still have the original in there, it IS worn. Running headers will often cause them to deteriorate even faster if they get too hot.

A good manual is always an asset. The Chilton book is ok, as is the Haynes, but the Ford manual is the best (but also costs a lot more).

The photos and illustrations can be a big help.

Did you check the column bolts? There's two that hold the tilt mechanism on inside the column, and I don't mean the one bolt behind the horn. Mine does it and that's what it is, these bolts work themselves loose and need tightening, I believe it's a 13mm. Take off the column cover and look from the right side, and move the wheel, you'll see where things are moving and where they're not.

In fact, here's some pictures of the bolts. The last picture is from the bottom of the column.

Im gona have to check out the bolts on my car tomorrow now.
My car is all over the road when I hit bumps (PA roads are horrible) and it's not safe at high speeds!! You can rock my steering wheel up and down, like the tilt is broken.... but its not, it work just fine. Im wondering if its those same bolts as in the pictures! If that fixes my problem I will be SOOO happy!! Then the next step is getting an alignment! My car pulls to the right pretty bad! Plus I never did it when I put my lowering springs in or when I did a KYB swap and put the 18s on, so its definitely do!!
I'll let you's know how it turns out!
