Default 1987 Mustang Smog/Air Pump Question

My Smog pump pulley on my 1987 GT Mustang 5.0L just started making a lot of noise after driving through a major rain storm. I've tried everything to quiet it...If I bypass the pump with a shorter belt, will I have to do anything else or can I leave the smog pump there...Or better yet, can i get rid of it completely and if so, what do I need to do? Any tips, tricks or remedies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

you can use the shorter belt without a problem and leave the unit in place, however if you choose to remove it you will need to plug the hose going to the emmisions pipe or remove everything altogether.this will require you install a bolt in the back of each head when your done.

You could do it either way, short belt to bypass it or take it off. If you want to take it off, you'll take the hoses off of the back of the pump and then the hard metal air line that goes down to the converter mid pipe. If it's got the stock 4 cat pipe, you'll have to cut this pipe off of the mid pipe and then you'll cap that line off.

Hey Eagle and Stingrey; is there anything diferent in both of your methods or can i leave the emissions tube with my stock 4 cat H-pipe screwed into each cylinder head? How much weight will this pump reduce if i take it off? Thanks fellow stangers.
