I would suggest these:

HEADS:
AFR 185
TFS High Port
Dart Pro 1 195
Brodix M1

INTAKE:
that Edelbrock RPM Air Gap you mentioned

CAM:
I'd check out Comp Cams Magnum or Xtreme Energy line.

With those, you'd have enough to beat the friend.
