An intake alone won't do much for you. First unless you have a larger MAF and throtle body your not getting any extra air to the intake, hence its a waste. But if you get it all you will see a difference on the top end. Its best to wait and do a complete package unless you like to keep tearing your motor apart and buying gaskets. I bought most of my parts on ebay and spent less than half of what the original post says.
Just remember set a goal and stay with it. If not you will end up with a bunch of parts that do not work well together.

I have a set of ceramic coated mac headers and off road h-pipe and when I install I want to remove the smog pump. What do I have to do with the piping that comes out of the heads? How to you plug those?

enentually i want to buy a set of heads, cam, and intake. If I am on a tight budget what would be the best combination?

Default My 2 cents for the beginner

My 2 cents: For those starting a project of modding your car i think the first thing you need to do is "think". Yes...think about what it is that you want to achieve. Think long term and what you exactly want in the end. (dont get something now, that youll later need to replace to reach another level of performance) Think, do you want high rpm power for the track (which most will never use) or do you want traffic light tire killing torque? After you think...then READ. read articles from the experts. Theres tons of great articles out there that will teach you lots of great stuff. Buy books on performance bulding!!! Yea you wont learn the secrets of Nascar or the NHRA but you dont need to know those secrets for your Boulevard racer. After you educate yourself a little about what you want to mod then make a list and remember to think long term. Dont have $1600 for a great pair of aluminum heads? Save up becasue in the end it will be woth it, rather then wasting money on $900 heads to gain 40hp whenyou can save up and spend that other $700 on that great set of heads to make 80 HP. Dont worry that the headers will only give you 5hp now and make you lose 10 lbs of torque becasue when you put on those great heads, the headers will make a big diference you didnt feel before. Something else you need to know is that bigger isnt always better (too big a MAF, throttle body, carb isnt always the best) See what im getting at ?? Think long term and have a plan, stick to it and be patient !!!

Default Mods and Problems

Hi,

I presently have a 1990 5.0LX 5sp that I bought new. The car has a whopping 11,000 miles on it. I hate to use that one a lot since it is in pristine condition. So, I am looking to buy another as a daily driver to replace another very high mileage vehicle which is not a Mustang. Anyway, what I am curious about is what to look for, with respect to problem areas, in the 1988 - 1992 vintage Mustangs when they have around 100K miles on them. Also, how long do these cars really last? I have seen several with over 150K on them and about all that was done was the usual brake pad replacements, shock replacements and of course, the every 6 month battery replacement.
Is this kind of longevity common? Are there any problem areas to watch out for in these cars? I like my 5.0 and compared to new cars, it seems much better built (I actually have a couple Hondas and to tellt he truth, the Mustang is a more solid car) I want to stick with a V8. Not too big on domestic sixes and fours.

Thanks,
Bill

Hey. I have a 1995 Mustang Gt 5.0L with cold air intake, short headers, catback exhaust, stage 2 clutch, short throw, new transmission, K&N filter on it. I'm thinking of doing 3.73 gears on it sometime soon. Would the gears give me more power for my money? Or would others parts that work with what I currently have give me what I am looking for?

installing 3.73's will really wake the car up....

well worth the investment.....

H/C/I would be next.....

you also should consider uprading your suspenion during the same time as installing gears.......

Kewl article Im open for suggestions. I have a 1967 mustang coup and I want to put a recently purchased 88' high output 5.0 engine. Anyone know the best parts through trial and error yet to save me the headache, light to light, inner city, 1/4 mile focused for racing.

gt40p's are from explorers and dont have as much horse power as the real gt40 heads.

theyll say gt40p on the head i think.

I have read your list and this is good information but would it not provide more help if you detailed it a little more?

Such as, the TB, you say change it but to what size? what are the pro's and cons of the sizes?

with u/l which heads work best with which u/l?

I guess I would ask for what combinations of components / sizes would perform the best at the end of the day?
