My 87 Mustang GT has a two tone Green/Silver paint color. The door tag however has a code of 1C which is black. The door tag is correct for the car as the vin number on the door tag matches up with the dash. I ran a car fax report and the original color listed when sold from the dealership was Green. I assume there was an error in the code on the door tag when it was printed. There is no way it was black and painted two tone Green/Silver unless they had every panel off, stripped the black paint and re-painted. The problem I am having is I can't find what the paint code should be for the Green pain and the silver paint for the bottom. Does anyone have the codes, I cant find them anywhere. I did find a code (5h) for an 87 which lists as Dark Clove Matallic but I am nit sure if that is green or not.
Color Code Black 1C Dark Grey Metallic 9R Light Grey 1K Scarlet Red 2D Medium Cabernet 2H Medium Shadow Blue Metallic 3R Medium Yellow 66 Dark Shadow Blue Metallic 7N Bright Regatta Blue Metallic 7H Sand Beige 8L Dark Clove Metallic 5H Oxford White 9L
I spent about two days looking for the correct color codes and could only find the list of color codes you provided but none seem to be Green for a GT Hatchback and none list two tone. I am not sure if possible but it may have been a special order color???????? It was shipped to the dealership on March 25th 1987 and sold and registered (as Green) on April 7th 1987.
I see in 1991 they had a Deep Jewel Green Metallic (code PA). I assume this must be it. I know it was never a different color, everywhere there is a paint chip it is the same color all the way through. I have had door panels off, and its green/silver all the way through. Attached is a not so good picture of the car, I will get more done once I get it out of the garage. Any thoughts on if special order colors were available from the factory?
the only thing i can think of... the car was painted
a the dealership prior to delivery....
and itsfirst registration show the color as green rather that black it was painted at the factory....

Ya its possible but I doubt it. Even inside around the hatch a bit of paint is flaking off and no signs at all of black anywhere, only green. Even the engine compartment is green, so they would have had to remove the engine as well. Its not a big deal I guess but its driving me nuts trying to figure out the story behind it.

I do not even think they had two tone paint until 90/91, which I find even more strange.
I have the original owners manual with a few phone numbers I may call. I doubt they will get me anywhere though, the phone numbers were filled out in 87. The car fax report does not give me any detailed contact information other than it was first registered in Ontario. I think my first stop will be to call Ford to see if I can get a the original build sheet and go from there. Hopefully that will get me somewhere, if not I will continue to
Carfax reports do not list color. They couldn't possibly. The VIN is all that is supplied to Carfax and the VIN doesn't contain any information about the color.
Tu-tone paint was available in ALL Fox years, first Black, then Charcoal, then Titanium.
Does the VC Label (door tag) and VIN at the base of the windshield match all of the rest of the VIN stickers on all of the major body panels and parts? There are over a dozen of those stickers all over the car......doors, hood, hatchback, fenders, quarter panels, ground effects, front and rear bumper covers...
There is also a partial VIN on the Body/Buck Tag - a small metal tag stapled to the radiator core support, behind the driver side headlamp. That tag also has many other codes on it....exterior and interior colors, bodystyle, options, engine, transmission, etc. There was not a green paint color available in '87. For a mustang to be painted green would have been a special order. That paint code should be on the Body/Buck Tag.
There is a partial VIN on the engine and transmission too. And on two tags hidden beneath the fenders.
If you do not believe me I can send you the actual link to the car fax report showing the color. Your correct they only have vin number to go by which would not tell them color but they also get their information from each time the car is registered. The registration lists the car color along with other information. See below copied directly from the car fax report. I have no reason just to make up some story, I have better ways to waste my time.....
Great information though. I will check out the Body/Buck Tag on the radiator core support. I will check out the other locations you listed as well. Engine and transmission are not original, they were just rebuilt but not original to the car so codes from them would not help.
You are correct on the two tone paint, miss-read an article where it said two tone was popular in the early 90's but available in prior years as well.

Nero,
Your not crazy. or we both are. i had an 87 mustang lk coupe. factory 2 tone paint with dark purple and light purple. i have the same situation as you. it's gotta be a special order but you'd think there is some kinda information on s.o. paint jobs.

Right on, I did think I was losing it after spending a few days looking for an 87 paint code that does not seam to exist.
I just found the tag that was attached behind the front headlight. The last 6 digits of the vin are stamped on it which line up to the vin number on the dash. There are is a bunch of other numbers stamped on the tag, anyone know how to decode the other numbers on the tag??
I know how to decode a lot of codes on the tag. You will not find any place on the Internet to do it yourself, or any books either. Just post them and I'll decode what I can.
