can't afford new window motor, please help me fix it
I have taken apart my power window motor and cleaned it, but it still doesn't work. Any ideas? When I opened up the motor, everything looked pretty good, so I can't figure out which part is bad.
When I connect the motor to the 12v battery, there is a slight "thump." Like a small jolt of the current flowing through the brushes and hitting the commutator, as if the armature is about to spin but doesn't.
The armature looks brand new. The copper coils look shiny and new, no signs of burning or corrosion. I cleaned the the commutator to exposed the copper, it had some carbon from the brushes on it, but otherwise no indication of damage or wear.
The magnets should be fine, they have no signs of wear or anything.
The brushes were fairly clean, not too worn. I just cleaned the edges that contact the commutator and I checked that they are drawing current with my test light.
The worm gear seems to have the right amount of grease and I took out the spur gears to make sure that they aren't preventing the armature from spinning.
1) The grease in the motor is dark gray or black. What type of grease is this? Is it supposed to be dark or does that mean it should be replaced. This shouldn't keep the motor from running since I took out the spur gears, so there is nothing to "resist" the armature from spinning.
2) If there is current flowing through the brushes and everything else seems to be making the right contacts, what else could be the problem?
3) anyone know how much current should be drawn by the motor? I've heard about 3 amps.
3) I just used a general degreaser/cleaner. Is there something better that might make a difference?
I just don't want to buy a new motor, if it is something like a 50 cent part.
I would hook it up without the window and see if it works without a " load " on it . If not then you probably have a short in the windings that you wont see . If you know an industrial maintenence guy , like me , then ask him to check it with a megger. Or go to a college where they teach dc motors and ask a student to megg it for ya

Never seen the inside of the window motor but there should be some bearings on each end of the armature that could be frozen. That would prevent the armature from spinning.

there is a bearing inside of there. it causes the window to move very very slow or not at all. i replaced both of mine when i got the car. you just open up the case and drop open the new one. it's very easy to do.
before it would get hung up on a certain part of the process, i would have to go up and down several times and sometimes help it move. i put ball bearings inside of the motor instead of that plastic junk if you can. just watch your hands when you move it up though. the repair kit i believe is about 15 though.
I have a 95 GT and the passenger window began to stick in both directions at varying points. If I tugged or push on the glass it will go up or down. I removed the door panel and could see no obvious cause so I greased all the joints and tracks that I could see. Still sticking so I removed the motor and it seems to be working just fine , teeth on the gear show no sign of damage ,teeth on opposing gear arm appear to be fine as well. This problem just sprang up one day ....I mean it wasnt like the window was begining to slowly wear out.. just...poof! Any ideas ? Thanks vegas979802
I think Fordgazm is onto something. I'll bet the copper windings have a short and there ain't crap you can do to fix it. Sounds like you've exhausted all the other possibilities. Go get another one from a wrecking yard.

open the gear case on the motor. there is a spur gear (mine is white plastic) that connects to the worm gear on the end of the armature. see if the teeth on the plastic gear are worn, if so, you can order a gear kit to replace it. auto parts stores carry these kits for $15-20, including the new grease you will need. (some guy on ebay sells a kit for 5.95, but make sure it includes the gear you need) The teeth on the spur gear are at an angle so that the worm gear can turn the spur, but the spur gear can't turn the worm so that your windows don't just slide down on their own (or by a car thief pushing them down)
also while you have the plastic gear taken out, separate the plastic gear from the pinion in its center. you may need to pry them apart gently. inside, you will find three plastic clutch discs. if these are cracked or deformed, replace them. I think the gear kit at the auto stores also includes these.
if the gears look ok, it sounds like the motor itself (armature, commutator, brushes) just needs cleaning as this would also keep the motor from being able to handle the load of the window. I can tell you how to do this if you haven't done it before.
let me know if this works. I have spent way too much time on my own dead motor and would like to know that my research helped someone, if not me. if you need pics, I will post pics of my dissassembled motor for you.
Ok just when Im feeling good about gettin my window fixed for around $20 its lookin like no one sells just the gear replacement kits for 95 model GT and a new motor runs about $90.Anyone know if this is correct? If not ...any suggestions, Ive tried all the parts places here i.e. Pep Boys,Advanced,Checker,NAPA,and even the Ford dealership. My motor is strong and the main nylon gear and worm gear are in great shape ,its the three little nylon clutch spacers that have shattered and need replacing. HELP ! Please ! Thanks Vegas
the bearings on my motor seem ok. the grease in the gear box, around the worm gear, and at each end on the bearings is dark grey, like graphite lube. is this right? or should I clean all that out and use something else?
ghostdog, where did you buy the bearings? tried pepboys and OSH hardware and they didn't have any
siemens makes a low torque and a high torque motor for the 1990 gt convertible. this is for my rear window, so do I want the low torque?
Just wanted to say thanks for the help and info concerning my problem with my power window in my 95 gt.Turns out that there are three small nylon dowels that fit in the center of the main gear inside the motor. The ones in my motor had shattered into about 200 pieces ! I contacted about 10 auto parts stores with no luck and was told by one of the Ford dealerships here that they didnt make a replacement kit for the 95.I was able to find a auto glass repair shop that had the kit ,they wanted $40.00 so I decided to try the guy on e-bay .He said he had it and shipped it out on Monday I got it on Friday and it only cost $19.67 including the shipping! Dont know the policy about mentioning specific parts suppliers in this group so if anyone else is in need of this kit ,or any other hard to find part you may want to give this guy a try ,e-mail me and I will give you the info . Again , Thanks ! Vegas
