You have to work it in sometimes.
Get aware of the oil pump driveshaft orientation, you may have to turn it slightly. Then put the distibutor in, holding onto the rotor button. Wiggle the rotor button slightly and you'll feel the gear engage the cam gear. The module should be pointed around the 5:00 position to begin with and you'll be trying to get the rotor to point to #1 on the cap. That should get you close enough to start it but you'll be needing to make sure the distributor is fully seated into the block.
